The BCB curriculum accommodates students taking internships at internal or external organizations (eg, non-profits, companies, etc) provided certain requirements are met and agreements are in place. Specifically, taking an internship during your PhD requires:

  • approval of the advisor.
  • approval of the thesis committee (and for that committee to exist and have met at least once).
  • approval of the BCB director.
  • discussion with both the BCB student services manager and business administrator.
  • completion and submission of the BCB internship permission form.

Guidelines (in progress):

  • The decision and timing of internships should be balanced with concerns about the timeline of the PhD and the needs of the advisor as well as the needs of the student. These are best discussed between student and advisor, and between student and thesis committee.
  • Since students are often an integral component of the activity of a research lab, students interested in applying for internships should start conversations with their advisor early.
  • Advisors, thesis committees, and BCB leadership may decline internship requests.
