Happy Halloween

Time to carve the pumpkin, if you haven't already. L and K both have party plans of their own to celebrate the evening. M and I are chauffeuring and co-ordinating.

Mmm is hosting an online Christmas tea party after U.S. Thanksgiving, if anyone's interested in joining. It should be fun.

Here is a great little TIC-TAC-TOE game for you to try. Just click here.

The true meaning of life

L's school recently hosted a fundraising group from Kenya, Africa. They are visiting the city until December. It is headed by a man called Mulley, and consists of a group of young people. They started off with their story. Then they gave a concert of remarkable singing and dancing. L said every one of them could really sing and they danced with a rhythm only the Africans have.

Apparently Mulley, about 65 years old now, grew up in the slums. He begged for work and built himself up from nothing. He became a rich man, with a big house and 8 kids of his own. One day, someone stole his car. He apprehended the youth and was struck by a look in his eye. He described it as a revelation. The boy reminded him of himself all those years ago in the slums. He took him into his house, educated him and gave him a job. Over the years, he adopted 20 more kids from the slums. These were the kids that were at the concert. They called Mulley 'father'. He gave them an education and a future. One of the girls said she was going to be a teacher. They are here to raise money to help others in their country. Mulley ended the rousing concert saying that these kids have added another dimension to his life, beyond making his fortune.

Needless to say, I was moved to tears and we will make a point to attend their fundraising show later this year. Apparently they fell short of their goal last year.

Burpee continued

Well, yesterday at step class I decided to try that new 'burpee' move. You know, it was...exhilarating and I'm glad I did.

Poor M and L waited 6 hours yesterday afternoon to get their H1N1 shots. The clinics in the area are overrun with the demand as 2 children in the region have died of this flu in the past few weeks. Now K and I have to get it done once the high risk people have had theirs. M isn't high risk, but he decided to get it after waiting 6 hours with L. They were offering the regular flu shots at the same time, but L's doctor advised waiting for a bit.

I was going to buy that new 'Details' magazine that has Adam Lambert on the cover, but had second thoughts as the content is a bit too racy for me, prude that I am. I'll just wait for his album. There is a lot of controversy on that album cover, as he looks very 'androgynous'.

Valor Chocolates

L decided to open this chocolate bar we've had sitting around for awhile. It's Valor chocolate from Spain. This one says '70% cocoa with mint'. It gives just a hint of sweetness and is absolutely delicious. It's 190 calories for one third of the 100g bar.

I was trying to buy some VHS tapes, because M and K still tape their shows on VHS, and they do not seem to be generally available anymore. Oops. We haven't set ourselves up to record on DVDs or hard drives? yet.

Brain Teaser

Japanese Maple Tree, I think

Image

We ate some delicious, fresh local spinach yesterday. It almost tasted sweet. The H1N1 clinics are starting up October 28th for the most at-risk people.

'Paranormal Activity' was the number one movie in the U.S. this weekend. It's a surprise sleeper hit, of the horror genre. It apparently only cost only $15,000 to make and is playing in limited release. I probably won't see it, because I'm too scared.

I received the following in an email:

' Okay you brainiacs, here is a brain teaser for you.

What nine letter word in the English language is still a word when each of the nine letters is

Take a few minutes to try and come up with a nine letter word that fits the

Okay, so just watch the video, cause you're never going to figure it out!

Good to Know

This is a 'burning bush' hedge. I love the bright red that it turns at this time of year, but it's such a boring green for most of the blooming season.

Image

I received the following in an email, my sister says it's also true in the U.S.

'I just had an experience which I hope you will not have to go through yourselves...
I was driving on the 427 South at Burnamthorpe at broad
daylight at 2 p.m., when I came upon two police cruisers who had pulled over a third vehicle. I slowed down to be cautious, and was surprised when the second cruiser pulled out and pulled me over. Approaching on the passenger side, the officer asked if I knew why I had been pulled over... I honestly expressed that I had no idea.
He informed me that Ontario law now states that when
approaching any emergency vehicle on the roadside with lights flashing, you must enter the left lane. He then proceeded to ticket me, taking three demerits and issuing a fine of , wait for it, . . $490! (Yes, I'm choking as I type that.) I realize I did not change lanes, but I do believe I was cautious.

My message is, be careful. He said that they are cracking down hard on this because of injured officers. I did not realize this was the law. Neither did any of my recently-licensed children. Or evidently not the 47 drivers pulled over.

If you want to read the legislation click on the site

Thriving on Pressure

The weather has turned cold, windy and rainy so I missed my walk yesterday.

Lately, I've been following up with some of the doctors to make sure they receive all the lab tests, faxes before I show up for appointments. These days, you have to take responsibility for your own care. I have this annual specialist appointment in December and that secretary seems to just file the tests without even checking them. Earlier this year, I followed up with her for weeks until she finally tracked my test down. I had gone to a lot of trouble to get it done in the first place. Yesterday, she wasn't even returning calls, so I called my general practitioner who usually receives a copy of the reports and that secretary said everything was ok. There are some offices that are run very efficiently, and those you take for granted until something like this happens.

K has a lot of homework this weekend, it's scary. I'm bracing myself for the November report card. L was invited to a party tonight, but made the decision that she has a lot on her plate today and decided not to attend. I'm proud that she realizes it's all about making choices when your schedule is jam-packed. L's only problem is deciding which opportunities she needs to seize. She told me she thrives on pressure and gets bored with a lazy summer. I'm the exact opposite.

Burpee

My friend told me that the Ontario Hydro Smart Metre pricing is now in effect in our area. It means that doing laundry after 10 pm (outside of peak hours) now saves us money. It's called time of use pricing. I did start a load at 7 am one morning, we'll see how far we go with that.

Yesterday we were on a new release of Step Class. The music is really current and some of the moves made me feel like we were becoming hip hop dancers. One of the songs was 'Let's Dance', which happens to be my cell phone ring tone, compiments of K. There is another song called 'Survivor', which is included as a part of a breast cancer theme. A new step was introduced called a 'burpee', but I just did the optional move as I didn't feel able to bend over too sharply or too low. Well, it was fun and fast-paced anyway, a good workout.

It was balmy, t-shirt weather yesterday, lovely.

M took K for a checkup with the thyroid doctor and it seems she didn't receive the last blood test results. She's a bit of a drive away now, so I have to go get the report faxed over from the regular doctor. He had quite a good preliminary report card from school, so we were quite happy about that. Adam Lambert Time for Miracles - Full Song

Here it is!

Yesterday, I went for an early morning walk with my friend S. She is planning to get those new invisalign braces for her son, but L told me she knows some people that got them and don't recommend them. Apparently they don't work, you have to wear them twice as long and you end up having to go back to the old style. So I let S know. I believe they are also a bit more expensive. It was chilly but the day turned quite beautiful and sunny. The squirrel departed the garage finally and we haven't seen him so far. I cleaned the yard a bit, cutting back some of the perennials but ran out of time. I also made it to church and ran into some neighbours there. The visiting priest made us laugh while delivering important messages.

The coming week is busy with errands and after school appointments.

A Compliment

I was sitting in a McDonald's restaurant yesterday morning, luxuriating in a small, double cream coffee. An older lady sat at the table next to me and groaned 'oh, my bones hurt'. I thought, 'my bones hurt sometimes when I get up, but not when I sit down'. She was joined by her daughter (early-thirties?). The mom looks over and says to me 'I love the way your hair looks when the sun hits it...the colour'. I said 'thank you' delightedly and offer up that it's a light brown shade. She says, 'it's just one colour? ...the streaks look like highlights'. I told her, 'That must be where the grey was'. I said I'd have to tell my hairdresser that they liked it. They said 'well, you certainly should because he did a good job'. I mentioned the colour only lasts 5 or 6 weeks. Then the daughter complains that her highlights wear off in a couple of weeks and she pays $120 to get them done. I told her I pay $50 for the cut and colour and realize I'm getting a good deal.

Needless to say, I was in a pretty good mood driving home. I never really even think about my hair. I was actually thinking about the squirrel. M managed to seal the hole in the garage roof, but it seems the squirrel is still there. He must've been stressed because he chewed a bit of the window frame and shredded the lace curtain I had hanging over it. We left the garage door open for a bit and even moved one of the cars outside for the night so he could see a clear way out.

Gift Cards

Gift card selection at the grocery store

Image
Can you believe all the kinds of gift cards you can now purchase at the grocery store? Books, movies, clothing, gas, music...there's no need to go to the mall. I noticed $25 and $50 denominations.

M saw a squirrel scampering through a hole in the roof of the garage yesterday. I googled the problem and it said to try moth balls as they hate moth balls. They also hate loud music and bright lights. He's also going to try to patch the hole.

I have all these new recipes to try and I seem to have lost the cooking spirit for the moment. Back to the old standbys for now. I finally made the baked donuts and they weren't bad. Of course, nothing beats the sugary, fried ones.

The Good News Is

Image

That I wasn't scammed the other day. I received a follow up letter in official letterhead from the Centre for Immunization and Respiratory Infectious Diseases, Public Health Agency of Canada requesting us to release immunization info from the health care provider. They've given a whole bunch of names, emails and contact numbers if I require further information and will even accept collect calls. The final report of the study will be published on their website or even in a scientific journal. The question is, should I sign the parent consent form to release the immunization record from the doctor? The information is used to improve immunization programs in Canada.

Good Advice

L had a dental appointment yesterday. She bit into a fork the other night and slightly chipped one of her teeth. The dentist decided to bond it with some glue as the small chip is still well attached, and we'll see what happens. She happens to have perfect teeth and has never even had a cavity. Such is life.

K had an eye exam at the optometrist. I asked if we should be seeing a specialist for a specific annual check on his retina as he had surgery last year to seal a retinal tear. He said 'if we feel it's required we will, but not at this point'. So we should just be aware of changes or symptoms. His associate, the optometrist that discovered the condition unfortunately moved out of the area. It's interesting that the optometrist's wife is now a real estate agent. Their kids are all grown up, so she decided to go back to work. Our pediatrician's wife also went back to work for the same reason. I picked up a Reader's Digest magazine in the waiting room and this aging expert advised in an article that we should try to make changes to our routines to avoid getting too upset when we are actually forced to change them. For example, take a different route on your regular bike ride. It sounds like good advice.

This is a 'bottomless soup bowls' video from Improbable Research

At M's family's Thanksgiving Dinner the other night, it seemed that everyone has decided not to take the swine flu vaccine when it becomes available. They don't think enough testing has been done on it and will risk their odds of getting and recovering from it. Many will also forego the regular flu vaccine. The more I read about it, I think we will take the H1N1 vaccine. I'm thinking I'd rather do whatever I can to prevent it than risk succumbing to the virus. I figure it's already being tested in Europe and the U.S. If you end up in the hospital, it sounds like a wait and see kind of thing where your loved ones stand by helplessly and watch you suffer on a ventilator that may or may not help you.

Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend

Local Fall Beauty

The other day, I passed by a picture in a store and thought, 'that's beautiful'. It was an inexpensive print all ready to hang, so I bought it. A friend came over and identified it as a well-known Picasso. Do you know this one? I must just have good taste!

Today we will celebrate Thanksgiving with M's family. His sister and her husband do a lovely butterball turkey. Tomorrow K is attending a lunch party. It's a reunion of his friends from elementary school. They must miss each other. Then we'll go out to dinner with my sister's family. My mom is out of town for awhile. Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians!

I think I got scammed

Nature's Fall Colour Scheme

Image
Here is a video worth watching.

Don't know if I got scammed the other day. For some reason I did a phone survey, which I haven't done for awhile. The lady with the filipino accent told me she's from Environics Canada and they're doing a survey on childhood immunizations. With all the swine flu publicity, I thought I'd like to help out. I gave her the ages and birthdates of my kids. Then she asked me to get L's immunization data. I read out all the dates of her shots and what shots she had received. Then she asked for L's first name. By the end of the call I had given her my first name, my birthdate, my address and L's doctor's name. Then I saw a scam email my sister had sent me that says never to give out birth dates. Life can be a bitch. I did google 'environics immunization' and found some vague stuff that makes me hope they really are a research company. Meanwhile we'll stay alert and hope.

For a bit of breaking news, here is the 2012 movie promo with Adam Lambert's new song 'Time for Miracles'. They are using the song to promote the movie! I think, as a fan, we feel like we've been the first to 'discover' him, it's a proud feeling to see him going places.

Ig Nobel Prize

Listen to the "Miracle" speech in this Youtube hit. It has been mastered by a 4 year old boy. The film is about the 1980 U.S. Olympic men's hockey team's legendary upset of the Soviets.

I've never heard of an Ig Nobel until I read the funny news article below. According to Wikepedia, 'The Ig Nobel Prizes are a parody of the Nobel Prizes and are given each year in early October for ten achievements that "first make people laugh, and then make them think"'. In fact, there is an Ig Nobel blog called Improbable Research. So, for example, one of the 2009 prize winners won for showing that cows who have names give more milk than cows that are nameless. The health prize went to the inventor of a bra that converts to 2 facemasks.

I met my friend S for a couple of early morning walks this weekend. Her brother-in-law (in his mid-seventies) is dying of colon cancer after a 4 year fight. He has deteriorated rapidly in the past week ever since he received the news that nothing more can be done. His wife is exhausted at this point.

Metrosexual Definition

I came across a new word 'Metrosexual' a few years ago and found a good definition on MSN Encarta (which by the way, will be discontinued at the end of the month):

'young straight stylish urban man: a young, straight, sensitive urban man who is unashamed to enjoy good clothes, stylish living, the art of decorating, and improving his personal appearance'.

Here's are some other great definitions from Urban Dictionary.

I remember the word came up in a discussion with the extended family. Did anyone know any such men and was it a good thing? I don't see anything wrong with being metrosexual, it's nice that men know how to take care of themselves and look good in a modern world. It would be great going shopping with one, for a second opinion.

What do you think?

For now, I just admire them in other people's gardens. I went for a crisp fall walk this morning, just before the rain started.

Earlier on, I went for a routine blood test and this is what I was confronted with at the lab door:

The sign basically says, use the hand sanitizer before entering and if you have any kind of cough or fever, take a face mask and put it on before entering the lab. Once into the lab, another sign asks that if you have a cough or fever, please wait at the pink line, a few extra feet away from the reception desk.

According to a friend, 'the artist' in this video 'is telling the story of one of the aerial bombings of Kiev in WWII'. Apparently this girl won 'Ukraine's got talent' with entries like this.

Authentic Leadership Style

I was reading Canadian Health and Lifestyle magazine and came across an interesting article on the 'authentic leadership style'. You may be interested in reading it especially if you think you have a leader type personality in the family. I remember once having an interesting conversation with an acquintance over coffee and I now realize he's a natural leader, and very successful at it. I had asked him what advice he would offer my daughter L for the future and he immediately said you have to know yourself. If I think about it, he is also very true to the person he is, and just accepts himself for what he is, right or wrong ('it's just the way I am', he would say). He had already sold his first multi-million dollar company before age 40 and has likely moved on to bigger and better things.

I've learned that the Ontario university application process boils down to entering 6 grade marks. Stressful. I've also heard it's important for teens to socialize as well as study hard. It's a question of prioritizing and time management. L was chosen president for a couple of her school clubs and may audition for a drama role. She has a part time job at the moment which is thankfully winding down, but fall tennis is starting up. I'm off to get her a birthday card for a party this weekend. My main worry is that the swine flu has arrived in Ontario.

K spent 2 hours making his own study notes for a Science quiz at school. That is a first for him, so hopefully it pays dividends. He seems determined to do better at school and I welcome this new maturity. Hopefully it will make a difference.

We've turned the house heater on as have a lot of other people around here. The cold weather is here at least for the time being.
