Butter and Herb Flavour

Image

I loved the pink of these orchids I saw at the grocery store.  In other good news, my daffodils have started to sprout in the garden as the ice slowly melts away and milder temperatures come in.  And wow, it's the last day of March!

Son K has less than 3 weeks of school left for the semester.  Then he is off until the fall.  He is getting ready for exams, a stressful time.  I think I say this every semester.  A lot of students are looking for summer jobs if they haven't found one already.

I bought these delicious pre-seasoned chicken chicken breasts at the grocery store, it was 30 percent off as it had to be either frozen or made that day.  According to the ingredients, it was breaded with rice flour, chickpea flour, cornstarch and 'spices'.  I guess that would make it gluten free.  It was a butter and herb flavour.  I wish I could replicate it.

Team G Square posted this interesting photo entitled 'Two Lizards'.  It's a great capture.  Well, I saw 4 lizards actually.

On Aging

I got this funny photo from Martha's blog at Plowing Through Life:

Image

And the photo is Springlike too, isn't it?

On the topic of animals, my sister down the road has a beautiful cat.  Although I'm not really a cat or animal person, I enjoy saying hello to this pretty cat whenever I am over there to see my mom.  I will pat her on the head and smile and talk to her.  So I was pleased the other day when my sister told me the cat likes me.  She will roll over and expose her tummy when she sees me and that apparently means she likes me!  I can really appreciate her intelligence and friendly qualities!

I will turn 55 in June.  I noticed new lines appearing on my face and mentioned it to a friend of similar age the other day.  She said she noticed the flesh below her eyebrows is thickening or something, just like her mother's.  We had a good laugh about this, what else could we do?

Slow Start

We're having a slow start to Spring, but it is coming. The days are longer and the beautiful sunshine cannot be suppressed! The ice is receding slowly but surely!

I took this photo on the first day of spring. I had forgotten about this shrub hiding under the ice all winter! It was an awful first day of spring with biting winds and snow flurries

Biography

Daughter L made this trout dinner the other day and was very pleased with herself!  I'm glad to see the vegetables at the side.

Image

I heard the announcers on the radio talking about Steve Job's Biography. It is well recommended, I think I will try to find a copy. They said he was a very eccentric man. Do you know how he relieved stress? He would soak his feet in the toilets at his company (Apple). They said he only had a bath every 2 weeks or so as he followed this special diet and he believed it made showers unnecessary! Of course, it didn't really work and he smelled, but refused to listen to people.

Blogger Haddock had a most interesting post the other day on a yoga class he attends.  Go here to see some interesting stretching ropes they use.  I noticed there are mostly middle aged and older people in the group.

Paint Party Friday - Nest

I saw this photo of a 'kid's nest with a view' in an online magazine. They are running a contest for the best small space. I fell in love with this room. And yes, I did vote for it! So I drew it (7"h x 5"w)in my art journal in watercolour pencils.  Happy PPF!

Western Omelette

Welcome to the official first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere! It is still quite cold for the rest of the week with some snow predicted.

Image
Western Omelette

I was craving a Western Omelette the other day and decided to make my own. It's great in a sandwich with ketchup! You saute some diced onions, green pepper and ham in a bit of oil. Then you mix some eggs with a bit of milk, salt and pepper and pour over it. Cover and simmer for about 10 minutes.

Strawberry Butter

Image
My Strawberry Butter

Daughter L made some strawberry butter on the weekend and I had never heard of it so I decided to try making some. Well husband M ended up doing it. I forgot to tell him to just fold the chopped strawberries in, but it tastes good anyway. I googled a few recipes and decided on this combination:

1/2 c butter
1/4 c icing sugar
1 c chopped strawberries

Cream the butter and sugar together, fold in the strawberries. Serve on pancakes, bagels, toast or crackers!

A Good Deed

Image

I picked up this small bowl of artificial spring flowers at the grocery store the other day. I buy too many flowers! It was only $6 and I love the cheerful yellow colour.

On yet another trip to the grocery store, it had snowed and the parking lot was full of slush which made the cart so difficult to push.  I was having difficulty getting to my car.  A helpful stranger decided to help me push it to my car.  He said 'that's my good deed for the day!'  I told him it was a good deed for sure, I couldn't have done it without him.

Really Interesting Facts

And Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

My uncle sent these to me in an e-mail, some are really interesting if you can get through the list of 50!

The  Human Body is  a treasure trove of mysteries, one that still
confounds doctors and scientists about the details of its working.
It's  not an  overstatement to say that every part of your body is
a  miracle.  Here are fifty facts about your body, some of which will leave you
 stunned...or...

1.
It's possible for your body to survive without a  surprisingly
 large
fraction of its internal organs.

Even if you lose your stomach, your spleen, 75% of your liver, 80%
of your intestines,
one kidney, one lung, and virtually every organ from your pelvic and groin area, you wouldn't be very healthy, but you would live.

 2.  During
your lifetime, you will produce enough saliva to fill two swimming
pools.
Actually, Saliva is more important than you realize. If your saliva
cannot dissolve something, you cannot taste it.

3.
  The
largest cell in the human body is the female egg and the smallest is
the male sperm.  The egg is actually the only cell in the body that
is visible by the naked eye.

4.   The
strongest muscle in the human body is the tongue and the hardest bone
is the jawbone.

 5.   Human
feet have 52 bones, accounting for one quarter of all the human
 body's bones.

 6.   Feet
have 500,000 sweat glands and can produce more than a pint of sweat a
day.

 7.   The
acid in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve razor blades.  The
reason it doesn't eat away at your stomach is that the cells of your
stomach wall renew themselves so frequently that you get a new
stomach lining every three to four days.

8.   The human lungs contain approximately 2,400 kilometers (1,500
mi) of airways and 300 to 500 million hollow cavities, having a total surface area of
about 70 square meters, roughly the same area as one side of a tennis  court.
Furthermore, if all of the capillaries that surround the lung  cavities were
unwound and laid end to end, they would extend for  about 992 kilometers.
Also, your left lung is smaller than your right lung to make room for
your heart.

9.   Sneezes
regularly exceed 100 mph, while coughs clock in at about 60 mph.

10.
Your body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring half
a gallon of water to a boil.

11.
Your body has enough iron in it to make a nail 3 inches
 long.

12. Earwax production is necessary for good ear health.  It
protects the delicate inner ear from bacteria, fungus, dirt and even
insects.  It also cleans and lubricates the ear canal.

13. Everyone has a unique smell, except for identical twins, who
 smell the same.

14. Your teeth start growing 6 months before you are born. This is why
one out of every 2,000 newborn infants has a tooth when they are born

15.  A baby's head is one-quarter of its total length, but by
the age of 25 will only be one-eighth of its total length.  This is because
people's heads grow at a much slower rate than the rest of their bodies.

16.
Babies are born with 300 bones, but by adulthood the number
is reduced to
 206.  Some of the bones, like skull bones, get fused
 into each other,
 bringing down the total number.

17.
It's not possible to tickle yourself.  This is because when
you attempt to tickle yourself you are totally aware of the exact time and
manner in which the tickling will occur, unlike when someone else
 tickles you.

 18.
Less than one third of the human race has 20-20
vision.  This means that
two out of three people cannot see perfectly.

 19.
Your nose can remember 50,000 different scents.  But if
you are a woman, you are a better "smeller" than men, and will
remain a better "smeller"  throughout your life.

 20.
The human body is estimated to have 60,000 miles of blood
vessels.

21.
The three things pregnant women dream most of during their first
trimester are frogs, worms and potted plants.  Scientists have no
idea why this is so, but attribute it to the growing imbalance of hormones in the
body during pregnancy.

22.
The life span of a human hair is 3 to 7 years on
average.  Every day the average person loses 60-100 strands of hair.  But
don't worry, you must
lose over 50% of your scalp hairs before it is apparent to
 anyone.

23.
The human brain cell can hold 5 times as much information as
an encyclopedia.  Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that
enters your bloodstream, and is itself made up of 80% water.
Though it interprets pain signals from the rest of the body, the brain itself
 cannot feel pain.

24.
The tooth is the only part of the human body that can't
 repair itself.

25.
Your eyes are always the same size from birth but your nose
 and ears never stop growing.

26.
By 60 years of age, 60% of men and 40% of women will snore.

 27.
We are about 1 cm taller in the morning than in the evening,
because during normal activities during the day, the cartilage in our knees
 and other areas slowly compress.

28.
The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt
light bulb, even while you are sleeping.  In fact, the brain is much
more active at night than during the day.

29.
Nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as fast as 170
miles per hour.  Neurons continue to grow throughout human life.
Information travels at different speeds within different types of neurons.

 30.
It is a fact that people who dream more often and more
vividly, on an average have a higher Intelligence Quotient.

 31.
The fastest growing nail is on the middle finger.

 32.
Facial hair grows faster than any other hair on the body.
This is true for men as well as women.

33.
There are as many hairs per square inch on your body as a
chimpanzee.

 34.
A human fetus acquires fingerprints at the age of three
 months.

 35.
By the age of 60, most people will have lost about half
their taste buds.

 36.
About 32 million bacteria call every inch of your skin home. But
don't worry, a majority of these are harmless or even helpful bacteria.

37.
The colder the room you sleep in, the higher the chances are
that you'll have a bad dream.

38.
Human lips have a reddish color because of the great
concentration of tiny capillaries just below the skin.

39.
Three hundred million cells die in the human body every
minute.

 40.
Like fingerprints, every individual has an unique tongue print
that can be used for identification.

41.
A human head remains conscious for about 15 to 20 seconds
 after it has been decapitated.

42.
It takes 17 muscles to smile and 43 to frown.

 43.
Humans can make do longer without food than sleep. Provided
there is water, the average human could survive a month to two months without
food depending on their body fat and other factors. Sleep deprived people,
however, start experiencing radical personality and psychological changes after only a
few sleepless days. The longest recorded time anyone has ever gone without sleep
is 11 days, at the end of which the experimenter was awake, but stumbled over
words, hallucinated and frequently forgot what he was doing.

44.The most common blood type in the world is Type O. The rarest
blood type, A-H or Bombay blood, due to the location of its discovery,
has been found in less than hundred people since it was discovered

45.
Every human spent about half an hour after being conceived,
as a single cell.  Shortly afterward, the cells begin rapidly
dividing and begin forming the components of a tiny embryo.

 46.
Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than
 left-handed people do.

47.
Your ears secrete more earwax when you are afraid than when
you aren't.

 48.
Koalas and primates are the only animals with unique
 fingerprints.

49.
Humans are the only animals to produce emotional tears.

 50.
The human heart creates enough pressure to squirt blood 30
feet in the air.

General Tso's Chicken

My exciting news is that husband M and I got tickets to the Queen + Adam Lambert concert playing in Toronto this summer! My sister told me to join one of Adam's fan clubs and we got a special password which enabled us to get tickets 5 days before the general public.  American Express also had 'Front of the Line' early access.  M had fun just booking the tickets, and the fan site crashed by evening with all the traffic.  Luckily we had already got tickets.

Laugh along with me at this French Comedy Routine.

Son K took this food photo while out with some of his friends recently. He says it is some kind of sesame chicken, called General Tso's Chicken? Well, it does look yummy!

Do you know it is the Ides of March today (when Julius Caesar was assassinated)?

Baked KFC Recipe

We had a big snowstorm yesterday after a few days of deceptively 'mild' weather above freezing.  Son K's school closed in the afternoon. Husband M used the snowblower.

I found this wonderful article from NYTimes discussing Toronto's Ethnic Buffet and thought you might enjoy the read.

I noticed this organic black kale in the grocery store recently:

A couple of years ago, I got this Baked Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Recipe from a fellow blogger who had found it on Pinterest. It is very popular in my house and I have simplified it with success. I thought I would share it today.

9 or 10 skinless chicken thighs

seasoning mix:

1/2 tsp salt
1 TBS Morton Season All seasoning salt
3/4 tsp pepper
2 tsp paprika
1 TBS oregano

Pre heat oven 350F.

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper, spread 2 TBS olive oil all over the paper. Coat chicken pieces with seasoning mix. Bake 15 mins per side. It is that simple. If you don't have Morton seasoning salt, you can use your favourite seasoning salt.

New Product

Image

Son K snuck this new product (peanut butter with honey) into our grocery cart the other day. It tastes quite good on toast, just slightly sweeter than normal peanut butter.

K's friend told him his father recently slipped at the icy mailbox and broke his right arm.  As regards the time change, I have been tired because I've been going to bed later and waking up earlier.  I imagine a lot of people are cranky this week.  It is also March (Spring) break this week for the elementary and high school kids.

On the weekend, I went walking with an old friend.  She has somehow developed a hyperactive thyroid and will have to see a specialist for treatment.  It was discovered in a routine physical in January of this year (fortunately).  I hope she can get good treatment soon, as she has already lost some weight and didn't look her usual healthy self.   Although she is actually feeling fine, and had no idea about her thyroid condition.

Portuguese Lunch

When we visited daughter L at her school this past weekend, we went to lunch at this Portuguese style restaurant. Their chicken was so delicious, it had a kind of balsamic vinegar flavour. The chorizo sausage was so good too. The olives served with the bread were unsalted in some way, and quite nice. You could eat a lot more of them this way.

Maple Syrup Time

We went to see daughter L at her school on the weekend. I was pleased we were able to start moving some of her stuff back home. She will be done school at the end of April. It is a bittersweet time for her and her friends, knowing that they have to move on to the next phase of their lives as young adults. Some will continue on to do their master's degrees. Some will go off to different cities to start their careers, make new friends. We took her grocery shopping and I saw a lot of these maple syrup desserts. It's that time of year when they harvest the sap to make the syrup.  Well we did buy these, L chose the cookies, K chose the pie and I chose the tarts!  They are all delicious with that distinct maple flavour, I've tasted all three!

Simple Pleasures

I bought a couple of bunches of tulips from Walmart, only $4 per bunch!

Image

Then I set them in my tulip bowl, don't they look pretty?  Simple pleasures for sure!

I was at the gym talking to a renovator who did some work for us around the house in the past.  He told me they figured out their annual electricity bill and it is about a quarter of what we pay!  He said he did all the insulation for his house.  It's amazing how much energy you can save just with proper insulation.

Daughter L made this banana cake recently and pronounces it a winner!
I always did prefer banana cake to banana bread.

Study Break

Image

During his study break last week, son K went shopping at a new outlet mall with a couple of his friends. He came back with this shiny new Coach wallet proclaiming it to be a good deal at $40. It was regularly $90. His friends bought them too. Coach has succeeded in their premium pricing strategy! It is an attractive wallet.

Yogurt and Berries

Yes, it's been snowing AGAIN!

This a favourite (and healthy) snack of mine lately. It's peach-flavoured yogurt with fresh blackberries.

On the subject of berries, I recently discovered that the eggplant is a member of the berry family.  It's also related to the tomato and potato. It's also a close relative of tobacco.

Funny

Daughter L will be done school in a couple of months.  It is time to start thinking about moving all her stuff back home.  Four years has gone by in a blink, it seems like just yesterday that I was planning her move to school. The beauty of this blog is that I was able to look back 4 years and find the post I made about the move to university!

I thought this was funny when I came across it the other day, so I saved it for you!

Crap Notepaper

On the weekend, I put all my winter flower arrangements away and replaced them with my spring flower arrangments.  It's my effort to hurry the spring season along!  Otherwise it was a pretty quiet weekend.  Did you watch any of the Oscars last night?  Some of the gowns were stunning.  I particularly liked Goldie Hawn's gown.

Son K had a study week off at his college and is back at school today.  He came home with this notepaper page one day. A friend said her mom gave her the notepad because she thought it was funny.  It is, isn't it?

Toasted Tomato Sandwich

It's March!

McDonald's has been having free coffee all week, so I'm all caffeined out!  It ends on Sunday.

I made some hamburgers the other day and had a lot of tomato slices left over, so I've been having them with buttered toast for breakfast. It's delicious, have you ever had a toasted tomato sandwich? It's a great idea if you are vegetarian too.
