Durty Dawgs

Chili Cheese

Image
The NYC

We had these pretzel hot dogs from Durty Dawgs delivered the other day.  I make a lot of healthy food but these kinds of orders get devoured at my house.  This chain features 'frings' which is a combination of fries and onion rings.  The pickles and cole slaw sides are crunchy and quite good.

Pictured above are the 'chili cheese' dog and the NYC (sauerkraut, onion, hot mustard).

Greek Style Potatoes

Image

I tried these lemony Greek style potatoes based on this Instagram video.  They are a delicious change.

First peel and cute the potatoes into wedges.

Next bring water to boil and then boil the potatoes for 6 minutes.

Season with olive oil, dried oregano, lemon juice, salt, garlic and dijon mustard.

Bake at 400F for 25 minutes.

Oops I forgot to add the dijon mustard, next time for sure!

Spotted on a walk

Image

This tree has grown in between and through the fence wires.

Then a few days later I noticed this bag of onions with the green onion shoots which had poked through the nylon mesh wire in a similar manner.

Son K thought the tree was in worse trouble.

Friday Art - Baby Alpaca

Image

Welcome to my Friday Art!  I am sharing a baby alpaca ACEO (2 1/2" x 3 1/2") in acrylic paint pens on black cardstock.  It comes together quickly with these pens.  He is based on a photo my sister-in-law shared on their visit to a farm.

Baked Bacon

Image

Well I found a new way on instagram to prepare a pack of regular bacon.  It says lay the slices out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.  They can touch but not overlap to prevent the slices from sticking together.  Then bake at 400F for 20-25 minutes.  Lay the slices on paper towels to drain and discard the parchment paper and the fat.  I will be using this method from now on!

Pork Sirloin Roast updated method

Image

I tried a new recipe for making my dutch oven pork sirloin roast.  With my other method it seemed I was overcooking the meat and it took a lot of time.

2-4 lb pork sirloin roast

I marinated the meat with onion, garlic, sugar or honey (1 tbs), soy sauce, balsamic vinegar (2 tbs), salt, pepper, thyme, tomato paste, olive oil.

pre heat the oven to 450F

I lightly coat my dutch oven with oil than put it in the oven for 20 minutes.

Then I place the marinated meat into the dutch oven uncovered and bake for 30 minutes.

Reduce the temperature to 250F, pour in a can of chicken stock and a can of water. Cover and bake the meat for 25-30 mins per pound or 145F internal temperature.

Friday Art - Acrylic Paint Pens

Image

I bought these new acrylic paint pens just to see what they were like.  I did these rainbows over a lake to test the effects of acrylic and watercolour paint pens.  The drawing below is an acrylic paint pen rainbow.  The one after is a watercolour  brush pen rainbow.   I love the brush pen effect of the manuscript brush pens.  They are easily blendable too.

Eggplant Pizza

Image

It's been awhile since I made eggplant pizzas.

I used japanese long eggplants.  I cut them in half lengthwise and then into smaller strips as pictured above.  I mix olive oil, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, dried basil and brush this over the eggplant strips.  Then I top with pizza sauce and then with cheese slices cut to size.  Bake at 375F for 15 minutes.  You can omit the pizza sauce and cheese if you like, it is still flavourful baked without.

Microwaved Cauliflower with Cheese

Image

Elizabeth shared that she microwaved her cauliflower and I decided to try it.  It is so quick and quite delicious, thanks Elizabeth!

I cut half a cauliflower into bite sized pieces.  I added 2-3 tablespoons of water and microwaved the bowl of cauliflower for 4 minutes.  Then I added a few slices of swiss cheese torn into pieces, some parsley, salt, pepper, olive oil, butter, onion powder, garlic powder.  After mixing it all together I microwaved for 2 more minutes. It is good.  You can add whatever you like, it may be just salt, pepper and butter.

I may try this with broccoli next.

Roasted Diced Butternut Squash

Image

I roasted some diced butternut squash, inspired by some I had in a restaurant recently.

1 butternut squash

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp pepper

1/2 tsp garlic

1/2 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp oregano or your favourite herb

2 tbs olive oil

The toughest part is peeling and dicing the squash.  A potato peeler works well to get the hard skin off.  Then you remove the seeds and dice.  Mix with all the ingredients.

Bake 400F 25-30 minutes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Friday Art - New Paint Markers and an Abstract

Image

Image

I got these new Manuscript watercolour paint markers and a couple of new white pen markers using a gift card I had won.  It was fun testing them out and it resulted in my abstract below.  I have seriously seen this kind of art at my dentist for example.  The owners have very minimalist art taste.  You ask yourself  'is that a painting really?'  But my black and white abstract is growing on me haha.

Also joining in with Nicole's Friday Face Off.  Sharing an old portrait I did of my late mom who passed in 2017.  She loved her ice cream.

Giant Cassowaries

Have you heard of giant Cassowaries?  This is an interesting 4 minute video about them.  They are 1.5m tall birds with dinosaur like claws.  They live in the Australian rain forest and are threatened by feral pigs that were introduced by farmers in the 1700s.  There are now 24 million of these pigs running around the rain forest.  The cassowaries are shy but dangerous when provoked.  They also support the rainforest ecologically.  Nothing is being done to stop these pigs from destroying the small cassowarie population remaining.  Here is a link with more information on them.

Fusili with bacon and parmesan

Image

Image

We had nothing but leftovers on hand for dinner one night.  I decided to make a quick fusili with bacon and parmesan.  Anything with bacon cannot disappoint.  I only buy this ready crisp bacon now as it is so convenient.  You remove the bacon and place it between paper towels on a plate. Then microwave the contents for 30 seconds and it is ready.  There is no messy cleanup.

3 1/2 c fusili pasta

a packet of bacon

4 cloves garlic

3/4 tsp red pepper flakes

2 tbs olive oil

1/2 tsp dried oregano

1/2 tsp dried basil

1/2 c sliced olives (I had a jar of antipasto so I some of that)

2 handfuls of grated parmesan cheese

1 c water

Cook the pasta in salted boiling water and drain.  Prepare the bacon.

Saute garlic in olive oil in another pan.  Add red pepper flakes, oregano, basil, olives.  Add the pasta and parmesan and water.  Mix well until it becomes creamy.  Cut the bacon into bits and combine with the pasta.  Enjoy!

And Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers!
