Welcome to Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date!  Here is my 'Eggs' still life for this week's theme! 

Rain's post is delayed due to a power outage I noticed.

It is a leap year, this end of February!

For the dinner date, sharing this yorkshire pudding that daughter L made from a package of Clubhouse Yorkshire pudding mix.  She just added an egg and used some oil.

I got this delightful package of freebies in the mail from the Canadian Red Cross soliciting for donations.  I didn't donate this time as there are so many other charities to consider.  Daughter L said she gets nothing from her charities, how about you?

Rebel Pinot Noir

 We recently tried this Rebel Pinot Noir Argentian wine.  I liked it.  Looking at the label, it is described as light, fresh and fruity.  So now I know what I like in wine!  

Sunday Smiles - Whole Wheat chocolate chip cookies

 For Gillena's Sunday Smiles I baked up some whole wheat chocolate chip cookies!  Happy Sunday!

Broccoli Soup

I made this blended broccoli and potato soup and here is my recipe:

1 onion chopped

2 cloves of garlic minced

1 broccoli crown cut into florets

950 ml low sodium beef stock

2/3 c grated cheddar

4 tbs light cream

1 potato chopped

3 tbs olive oil

1 bay leaf

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried parsley

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp pepper

Heat oil, saute onions, add garlic, bay leaf, herbs, salt, pepper.  Then add broccoli, potato.  Add stock and a cup of water to just cover the vegetables.  Bring to a boil and simmer 15 minutes until vegetables are soft.  Add cream, cheese, and stir in for a few minutes.  Blend with an immersion blender right in the pot.

Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date - Ladders and Air Fryer Bagels

Welcome to Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date!  The theme is 'Ladders'.

 

 

For the Dinner Date, I was inspired by this 2 ingredient bagel recipe but I seemed to have to make a lot of changes to make it work for me.  Here is what I ended up doing.  They are actually quite moist and tasty.  I may try it again using different flours, maybe spelt flour.

1 c white flour

1 c ww flour

4 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1c Greek yogurt

1/2 c water

1 tbs sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning

1 tbs milk (or optional egg wash)

Mix flours, yogurt, salt, baking powder, water. Knead into a ball. Divide dough into 5 pieces approx. Roll into logs on lightly floured board. Connect the ends. Brush with milk, sprinkle sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning. Air fry 350F on parchment paper for 15 minutes.

 It is impressive what the Dutch have done to harness wind energy.

Mint

 I didn't know that planting mint around the house discourages ants.  I did hear that they do tend to overtake an outdoor garden, regardless of pest fighting properties.

Gillena's Sunday Smiles - My Amaryllis in full bloom

 Welcome to Gillena's Sunday Smiles.

I am showing my Amaryllis in full bloom, this photo was taken Feb 11 2024.  I must say a lot of the fun was in the anticipation of the full bloom.  Enjoy!

The truth is the small pot fell over a few days earlier and we had to put it into a larger container, prop and tie it up.

Spelt Flour Blueberry Muffins and Such a Delight

 I decided to make these blueberry muffins with spelt flour.  They were delicious!

We were on a group video chat with my great (grand) niece who is about to turn 3.  She says 'Christine, the sun's going down!'  We had a chuckle about that and I told her 'wow, is it really?'  She is such a delight, it is a special age.

Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date - Lips and Korean Ground Pork

Welcome to Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date!  The theme is 'Lips'.  

For the Dinner Date, I forgot to take a photo but I used this recipe to make Korean Ground Pork.  I liked that it used Gochujang paste.  

1 lb ground pork

3 cloved garlic minced

1 onion finely diced

1 tbs grated ginger (I used ginger powder)

2 tbs Gochujang paste

2 tbs soy sauce

2 tbs honey

1/4c water

1 tsp sesame oil

pinch of toasted sesame seeds

2 -3 tbs oil

Brown the meat in oil, set aside.  Brown onion, garlic, ginger.  Add pork, gochujang, soy, honey, sesame, green onions, oil and water.  Sprinkle a pinch of toasted sesame seeds.

The Superbowl Party

 Daughter L and her husband invited us to a Superbowl party at her house.  Her husband's parents decided to come when they heard about all the yummy food.  It was a lot of fun although a stressful game.  

We had pizza, caesar salad, chicken bites and restaurant quality appetizers.  Daughter L baked a creative game cake.

Baked cheese in pastry

 I made this baked cheese in pastry with rosemary garlic and honey inspired by this recipe.  You can serve as an appetizer and dip crackers in it, I ended up slicing it and serving it in small slices as a cheesy appetizer.  Everyone loves cheese in any form.

Bird birth control

 It seems our city has been feeding birth control pills to the pigeons in an effort to control their population.  They started last May and are awaiting the results.

The World's Busiest Highway and Chinese New Year

 I was shocked to learn that Toronto has the world's busiest highway but it is true!  We think it is the section close to Pearson International Airport, some 20 lanes of highway.  There are 5 express and 5 collector lanes in both directions according to my friend.

And Happy Chinese New Year to all who celebrate!

Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date - Far Away and Korean Beef Bulgogi

 

Welcome to Rain's Thursday Art and Dinner Date!  Her theme this week is 'Far Away'.  Can you see my flag 'far away' on the next mountain?

For the dinner date, I made a Korean Beef Bulgogi from this site.  I liked it with rice.

2 tbs oil

1/2 onion finely chopped

2 cloves garlic minced

1 lb lean ground beef

2 green onions diced

Bulgogi sauce:

4 tbs soy sauce

2 tbs brown sugar

2 tbs mirin

1 tbs sesame oil

1 tsp pepper

1 tbs toasted sesame seeds

Mix the sauce, set aside

Heat oil, saute onions, garlic, add ground beef.  Cook until browned and fully cooked.  Add sauce and green onions and simmer 2 minutes.
