Inspiration
Blockchain hit the world with a bang in 2008, but has its power been fully harnessed? We aim to dive deep into that question by solving the environmental problem of pollution and social problem of traffic using blockchain! The car pollution problem, an environmental problem faced since the birth of automobiles, has often been neglected by modern solution makers. Regular workers and commuters spend exorbitant amount of time in traffic. But we've decided to take on the challenge and present to you... Beep Boop, the modern-day marketplace for managing your B-credits, paying your carbon footprint with an aim to reduce traffic congestion.
What it does
Beep Boop works in 3 simple steps: 1) The government allocates B-credits (Beep Boop credits) to the people. 2) People can use B-credits at gas stations to pay usual price. Those without credits must pay a higher price. 3) Users can sell/buy B-credits over our Beep Boop app.
But what does it actually do? By effectively locking the number of B-credits annually allocated to people, there is an invisible 'cap' set over the carbon footprint of the city because people who go over there limit have two options- buy more from the marketplace or pay a higher gas price. Moreover, those who reduce there carbon footprint can sell their extra credits, effectively being 'rewarded' for their environmentally-friendly habits.
How we built it
We used IBM’s Hyperledger Composer as our blockchain framework, hosted on Microsoft’s Azure. We developed the user mobile app using Java and the visualization web app using Angular.
Challenges we ran into
Learning to implement our own blockchain in under 24 hours.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
In less than 24 hours, we have built a fully functional blockchain system, supported by a user interface on Android and a visualization feature on the web.
What we learned
The technical implementations and applications of blockchain, web development, mobile app development.
