Context
Twitter has recently implemented a feature that allows its premium users (via Twitter Blue) to display a Non-Fungible Token from their personal collection as their profile picture. Such a picture is displayed with an hexagonal shape, whereas a regular profile picture keeps the usual circle shape. This option is currently only accessible for early access, but is likely to be deployed for public use in the future. Twitter only supports static images minted on the Ethereum blockchain and we can expect the feature to expand to other blockchains such as Solana and Tezos.
Problem
This feature puts NFTs at the forefront of internet discussion. NFT owners can now proudly display their collections; however, it is not always easy to determine whether a token is genuine or not. As stated before, the feature allows a user to display an image minted on the Ethereum blockchain as an NFT profile picture. The problem is that it applies to ANY NFT. That is, if someone screenshots an official token, and then mints it on the Ethereum blockchain, he will now have a “stolen” version of the NFT. To verify if the user owns a jpeg from an official collection, Twitter only displays the contract address of the token when clicking on a profile picture. We think this is not enough.
Solution
This is where TrottierFloor5’s product comes in: Fake Fungible Token. Our goal is to provide a fast and simple way of busting a token burglar. Our google extension alternative checks whether a hexagonal profile picture belongs to an official NFT contract, and if not, replaces the stolen profile picture by a recognizable fake stamp. No more need to click on each and every hexagonal shaped profile picture as this information will be readily available on the feed. This will thus deter dishonest people from trying to fake some sort of notoriety. We are currently focusing our product on Cryptopunks collection, but we are planning on expanding to more collections.
