Inspiration

Being a first year in college and getting sick while living alone for the first time is scary. Not knowing which medication to take and deciding whether we needed to see a doctor, is a problem that us and many other freshman face in college. We decided to make our own solution to the problem.

What it does

Our project hosts a service where the user can select which human body system is in pain. From there the user will be given common symptoms that occur in diseases within the selected body system. After selecting the symptom, the user will be given the name of an over the counter medication that can be bought without a doctors prescription at a local pharmacy. Our website saves the time and hassle of going to the doctors for a mild sickness, and gives medication utilized for that body system and symptom. We created a data base with more than 65 over the counter medications for different systems in the body as well as different symptoms within each system.

How we built it

Our website was built utilizing the React JS framework and Material UI library. We used JSX and CSS to create our program.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we faced was routing to different pages using the react router component. Another challenge was having to manually input many picture files and input a lot of text. While working we created a lot of files and folders, but in hindsight a lot of it could have been streamlined and it made the code a lot more disorganized than it should have been

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One accomplishment that we are proud of is that we were able to figure out how to route through the webpages efficiently. We were able to quickly pick up how to write efficient code in React. We were proud that we were able to effectively work through git and GitHub, despite it being our first time using it collaboratively. We are also extremely proud of the layout and styling as none of us had much experience in UI/UX design before.

What we learned

We learned how to create a website from scratch using React. We learned how to use React libraries such as Material UI and learned how to route through different web pages. We also had little to no experience with GitHub and we were able to collaborate effectively. Prior to today, we did not have much prior knowledge of the Reach framework or git and were able to pick it up very fast and thrive.

What's next for MedMe

We plan to implement more functions for MedMe and possibly integrate a medical based API in order to streamline data entry. A better and more interactive UI. There are limitless possibilities to what we can do with out website.
