Inspiration
Since the pandemic, communities all over the world have distanced from one another both physically, and emotionally. The need to replenish community bonds and relationships require individual effort. The NeighbourBite app allows local neighbourhoods to share or sell their home-made food items. Providing a platform where one can build these connections will promote a tight-knit community as well as enhance cultural appreciation. Furthermore, this app encourages sustainability through multiple facets of reducing one’s carbon footprint. Through higher consumption of home-cooked meals, the environmental impacts produced by fast food companies can be reduced significantly.
What it does
The NeighbourBite app will allow local neighbours to share or sell their home-cooked meals. Likewise, members of the neighbourhood can purchase the food items to help support their community. One of our highlighted features is the event page. This page also promotes citizens to create events where members of the neighbourhood can attend and bring a dish of their own.
How we built it
The mobile application was built through Flutter and Firebase
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges occurred when two of our members had left midway through the hackathon. This was a difficult situation as we had established everyone’s roles at the very beginning of the hackathon and had to find a way to adapt quickly to this big change.
What we learned
Google Firebase, Flutter & Dart, Figma
What’s next for NeighbourBite
While NeighbourBite is a community-focused food app, we would like to expand this to different sectors within the community. For example, creating features that allow seniors to teach skills and share knowledge within their neighbourhood, promoting them to be active participants within in their communities
