Inspiration
Physiotherapy doesn’t fail in the clinic — it fails at home, where patients are left without feedback and up to 70% struggle to adhere to their exercises, often due to uncertainty or fear of doing them incorrectly. We were inspired to close this gap, especially for elderly patients and those with limited access to frequent in-person care.
What it does
Physio For You brings the physiotherapist into your living room with real-time, on-device AI that guides patients through exercises correctly, providing instant voice and visual feedback to improve adherence, build confidence, and accelerate recovery.
How we built it
We used Google MediaPipe BlazePose to perform real-time pose estimation directly on-device, detecting 33 skeletal landmarks and comparing patient movement to clinically verified reference exercises using joint angle similarity and weighted scoring, all within a browser-based interface.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring accuracy across different body types and camera positions was challenging, as was handling low-visibility cases where limbs are partially obscured. We also had to balance technical complexity with a simple, accessible interface suitable for elderly users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a fully functional, real-time prototype that runs entirely in the browser with no data upload, delivers meaningful feedback instantly, and addresses a real, high-impact problem in healthcare with a scalable solution.
What we learned
We learned that effective healthcare technology isn’t just about technical performance — it’s about trust, usability, and clear boundaries, especially when supporting vulnerable users without replacing clinical decision-making.
Future recommendations
Next steps include developing a clinician-facing portal for prescribing and monitoring exercises, expanding the exercise library with verified medical content, and introducing longitudinal tracking through an exercise diary. We also plan to improve accessibility with multilingual audio guidance and enhanced UI modes for elderly users, and explore scaling into areas like post-operative rehabilitation, stroke recovery, and general fitness while maintaining strong clinical oversight and data privacy.
