Inspiration

Through Recycle Rush, we aimed to tackle an issue close to our hearts: waste sorting, with a specific focus on raising awareness among the younger generation. We approached this project with a key statistic in mind: 18% of materials sent to recycling centers end up being discarded.

What it does

Recycle Rush is an educational game designed to sensitize children to the challenges of selective sorting. The game unfolds on a website and utilizes LEDs and motion sensors. The child scans the waste, and the light illuminates above the correct bin. They must then quickly place the waste into the bin. When the waste is thrown into the bin, the sensor stops the timer and provides information on the type of waste along with the number of seconds it took to dispose of it.

How we built it

We created our innovative website by seamlessly blending the power of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python. The core functionality revolves around a unique scanning feature, allowing users to scan an item and receive instant feedback on whether it's paper, metal, or categorized as trash. The interactive element is brought to life with JavaScript, dynamically lighting up corresponding indicators based on the scan results. In addition to the practical scanning tool, our website hosts informative pages filled with educational content. This fusion of coding languages and creative design has allowed us to craft a user-friendly platform that not only offers practical utility but also educates users on responsible waste disposal practices.

Challenges we ran into

Developing our website posed challenges that spurred innovation and collaboration. Integrating the scanning feature across devices, optimizing real-time feedback, and ensuring seamless communication between frontend and backend were hurdles we overcame. Balancing educational content with interactive elements required careful consideration. Despite these challenges, our team's dedication and problem-solving skills led to a successful outcome, creating a website that efficiently scans items, provides instant feedback, and offers valuable educational resources.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of achieving a seamless scanning feature that accurately identifies materials and integrates real-time feedback with illuminating lights. The addition of informative content pages highlights our commitment to user education. Overcoming challenges in device compatibility, performance optimization, and backend integration demonstrates our team's resilience. Together, these accomplishments make our website a user-friendly and innovative solution for practical scanning and education.

What we learned

Developing our website taught us valuable lessons in integrating diverse technologies, testing for compatibility, and optimizing performance. Balancing interactive features with educational content enhanced our understanding of user experience design. Overcoming challenges in real-time feedback and backend integration underscored the importance of teamwork and adaptability in web development. The project emphasized the iterative nature of the process, turning challenges into opportunities for improvement.

What's next for Recycle Rush

For Recycle Rush, the roadmap ahead involves refining the scanning feature for increased accuracy and usability. User feedback will guide improvements to ensure an intuitive interface. We're expanding educational content, providing more resources on sustainable living. Collaborations with environmental organizations and communities are in the pipeline, aiming to amplify the impact of Recycle Rush. Ongoing updates will enhance security and keep the website at the forefront of technology, aligning with our commitment to promoting sustainability and responsible waste management. The future for Recycle Rush is about continuous improvement, innovation, and making a positive impact on the environment.
