Inspiration

When one of our members, Akhil, went to Costa Rica, he was struck by the devastating reality of earthquakes. We decided to make our website and app so that other people would be more prepared that Akhil was in the face of an earthquake.

What it does

The website is designed to give people the rescources that they need to prepare themselves and their families for earthquakes. The app has a few extra features. First of all, it gives live updates for any Earthquakes that occur in your area. We also have a map feature that transposes earthquakes onto the world map.

How we built it

We used the USGS API to provide us with the latest information about the deadliest earthquake. We complied many different public APIs that provide data of earthquakes. As for the coding itself, we used android studios to develop an application and we used repl.it to make our website

Challenges we ran into

We had a vision to make a map, but at the start it kept crashing no matter what we did. Luckily, we realized that the google maps API that we were using was outdated, so we had to recode the maps.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The dual factor of the website and an app. And as relative beginners, we were proud to see our vision come to fruition.

What we learned

We learned about domain hosting from the helpful workshops, and we also learned a lot more specifics about coding. Also Coding is fun.

What's next for Seismos

We are working on the backend for earthquake alerts. We would also like to move the app to apple. We decided to focus on Androids, as in areas that need this the most predominantly use Android. But having it on the play store would be helpful.
