Inspiration
We were inspired by the ignorance in so much of the world to how deadly viruses such as COVID-19 spread through communities and wanted to examine how viruses are affected by different parameters.
What it does
The user can specify a situation in which a pandemic is starting, and our program does a graphical simulation of what that situation may look like in a community
How we built it
We used c++ and sfml to create our simulation
Challenges we ran into
Only one member of the group had ever worked with sfml before, so there was a learning curve for much of the group. Also, only one member of the group had ever worked in a hackathon, so time management became an issue as the deadline approached.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of how well we were able to model a viral outbreak, and how smooth the simulation came out
What we learned
We learned lots about working as a group and modeling exponential growth
What's next for Virus Simulator
Some of the algorithms that we used were not the most efficient possible. As a result, simulations of extremely populous dense communities have some lag and get less effective hit detection. We'd like to explore more efficient algorithms if we had more time.
