Inspiration

With recent world events, the need for an application that brings people together has become ever so important. WeTour enables individuals to embrace new culture with open arms. By being able to be embraced, the community as a whole can come together and be able to share feelings never felt before.

What it does

The website allows you to find tour guides in different cities and even become a tour guide yourself! You can make your preferences for your trip and express yourself with our profiles. You can even get notifications about your trip and access all these features by creating an account.

How we built it

We chose to use Django for our web templates and backend, which enabled us to develop and connect both our frontend and backend simultaneously. With regards to designing the site, we made use of TailwindCSS for easy customizability. Additionally, the Twillio and mapquest APIs are used to send phone notifications and show map locations.

Challenges we ran into

In terms of challenges, some of us did not have experience with Django and TailwindCSS. This caused us to have issues with filling additional forms. However, we managed to implement many of our features! Additionally, we had issues with our mission because we initially were going to have payments associated with our trips. However, after a mission evaluation, we realized we wanted to focus on building connections.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The team of WeTour finds pride in knowing a lot of the accomplishments along the way among this Hackathon ranged from being able to indulge in rich culture-filled conversations, and by learning tutorials on the spot to help ease the feeling of imposter syndrome. We’re really proud of learning and enriching our understanding of Django and web development as a whole. We learned new tools that could be applied to a professional and academic level.

What we learned

Through WeTour, new frameworks and languages in the mix were well learnt to provide for a foundational application to deliver our services on.

What's next for WeTour

WeTour is full of features and promises to deliver more! WeTour can be so much more with time and effort. In the near time, the application has potential for furthering its login security, strengthening its tour guiding verification system, and continuing our promise to connect to more people across the world.
