Inspiration
As students ourselves, we have experienced firsthand the difficulty that comes with having tens of different accounts to manage your school workflow. We realized that a tool focused on consolidating core features of educational tools would be a highly useful product.
What it does
Our product features 3 different solutions: video chatting (intended for discussion and collaboration between students), livestreaming (intended for teachers to seamlessly hold office hours and live study sessions), and text chatting (intended for students to ask questions and learn from one another).
Additionally, we worked on a business model for our product. We decided to follow the conventional edtech route, which typically charges schools or districts one-time or subscription fees for the product. Hence, schools can use our convenient phone payment system to purchase our product for school use.
How we built it
We built the backbone of our app using the Next.js framework. We used a host of technologies like Twilio, Typescript, Node.js, React, ChakraUI, Figma, and Heroku for the technical design and backend of our project. Specifically, we used 6 Twilio features for this product: SMS verification, email verification, mobile payment processing, video chatting, live streaming, and group messaging.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many challenges, as is often the case. For instance, there were the typical pesky errors that come with advanced web design. Additionally, this was our first time using Twilio, so there was a bit of a learning curve when using the Twilio console and all of its services.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First and foremost, we're proud of our idea and ambition in attempting to build an all in one product to assist the student demographic. We are also proud of the aesthetically pleasing UI/UX, creative and multipurpose integration of Twilio, and of course, the successful integration between the backend and frontend of our app.
What we learned
We got a great introduction to Twilio's services and incorporating them into our product. We sharpened our design skills, technical skills, and collaboration skills.
What's next for Workflow
Of course, we have many more features that we have in mind, since our goal is to minimize the number of different services and accounts that students must use. Some new feature ideas include a todo list and assignment scheduling tool.
