Inspiration
We drew heavy inspiration from mental health apps such as Headspace and Tsuki, however, we wanted ours to be unique and to stand out from the competition. The aspects we included that many apps do not have are the exclusion of in-app purchases, growth documentation, journalism and reflection, virtual pets, and meditation/physical exercises.
What it does
Wisp is an innovative application that allows users to improve their mental wellbeing by completing healthy tasks. Through the Wisp app, users are able to maintain and improve mental wellbeing by setting goals, participating in breathing exercises, listening to music and ambient sounds, and logging daily reflections. Each task accomplished by the user generates an energy point. Once the user finishes enough activities, they are able to send their pet wisp on adventures and collect artifacts and stardust shards, which can be accumulated and traded for accessories in the shop. Our minimalistic yet aesthetic and easy to use interface facilitates user experience and encourages users to connect with friends through the app by traveling with their friends’ wisps, trading artifacts, and playing minigames. We hope that users of Wisp will benefit from the interactive exercises provided to improve mental wellbeing and overall relaxation!
How we built it
Our team used Axure RP Team to build and design the prototype for our Wisp App. The app is fully functional and full of things for you to do and explore! We also used FL Studio to create a few original songs that we have included in the app (Raven's Descent Arrangement by Daniel Liu). We used Adobe Fresco to draw the wisps among other images in the app (by Jolyan Ye). Finally, we used Clickup to organize all of our ideas, and create to-do lists and more.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest issues we ran into during the development process was the collaboration aspect of Axure. Using the RP Team collaboration feature, Axure only allowed one person to check in and out of a page, which meant that no 2 people could collaboratively work together on the same page at the same time. Our workaround for this issue was just to check in and out constantly and get changes for the product so that our product was always saved and loaded to the most recent cloud save.
Another issue we had was embedding audio into Axure. Unfortunately, audio is just not a feature that really works well with Axure, but luckily there were some very helpful tutorials online to help us get around this issue using some backend javascript and online mp3 hosting.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of learning such a new and unknown application and creating a fully functional application prototype within the span of 48 hours! We were able to also create original music and art for our product, which enhanced the overall design and aesthetic. Of course, working together as a team is never an easy task with so many heads and opinions, but we were able to collaborate very well together and for that we are proud of our persistent and achievements during this hackathon.
What we learned
During the hackathon, we learned a lot of valuable things. We learned how to use a new application, Axure, to create prototypes for apps, we learned how to better manage our time during stressful situations, and we also learned that it was probably not a good idea to attend a hackathon during a school weekend!
What's next for Wisp - Wellness Your Way
Here is our roadmap for the next few months:
Month 1-2: Expand content: physical exercise/stretches, log nature walks, add more cooperative interaction (in person mental health activities, virtual wisp + accessory + currency trading system), add biomes/areas to explore
Month 3-4: Allow for more customization: themes, set own goals/reflections, upload own music/sounds
Month 5-6: Characterization of wisp: communication with user, user makes decisions for wisp, wisp can be raised in different ways/adopt various personalities
