Major S&box Game Engine News

The S&box game engine (recently covered here) is a now released now open-sourced spiritual successor to Gary’s Mod just had two major announcements. S&box is perhaps closest to Roblox and UEFN in that it is both a game and a platform to create games, being built over top of Valve’s Source 2 game engine and a custom C# engine layer. Of the two announcements the first one is pretty straight forward… a release date. It has been announced the S&box will be released on Steam on April 28th with an estimated $20 price tag.

The second announcement is perhaps the most important, but vague on details announcement came directly from Facepunch studios. with their 26.023.26 release:

We signed the new license with Valve this week, allowing us to allow people to export games from s&box’s editor and ship them as standalone games on Steam without paying us anything. This has been a bit of a complicated journey, but with a lot of reassurance and compromises, we’ve got there.

We still have work to do on our end. We need to create a license between Facepunch and the people shipping games, then double and triple check everything is legit, but I wanted to share this progress with the community so they know that Valve did the bizzo.

When it’s ready we’ll be piloting it with a few select people. The first out the door is likely to be My Summer Cottage.
