I haven’t posted here since September, when I put up three “flash fiction” pieces in a burst of activity. I wrote a good bit of those very short stories over the summer, as well as a slice-of-life (not erotica) novella about a kinda-sorta love affair in New York City that was set against the background of today’s contentious politics; but I ultimately decided the novella wasn’t what I wanted to publish at this time.
“Divine Duchess Noreen” has a saucy sense of humor but she can be quite artfully mean and dominant when her audiences clamor for it…
I also worked on a long story for awhile that I have just published on Kindle entitled The Heart Exam. It’s not porn, it’s again what I like to call “slice of life” fiction, just a contemporary story about people’s emotions and thoughts and the decisions that grow out of them. Basically, an older fellow in NYC develops a crush on a young woman in Ireland…a plot situation as old as time but it’s examined in the context of the guy waiting to get a medical test and thinking about the gal partly as a way to comfort himself. They are separated by the Atlantic Ocean, as well as age and circumstance, so most of the relationship takes place in the guy’s head.
You see, I came to the realization as I was writing this–or rather I should say I finally admitted to myself–that as a fiction writer (and as a person) I consider thought a valid form of action, and since I am most familiar with all this cogitating, that’s what a lot of my characters do, too: they think and only take physical action (or not) after putting themselves through considerable mental and emotional twists and turns. This is what a lot of my non-erotic stories are about, although there are sensual elements in this story that may be a little titillating, or not, depending on your susceptibilities.
All I want to add is that I looked through hundreds of photographs until I found a cover shot of a model who caught both the allure and the mischievous humor of the character my protagonist falls for, so I hope you’ll check out the story and meet “Divine Duchess Noreen” for yourself through the cover image (posed by a professional model) and through my words and learn about the fascination she has not just personally for my hero Barry, but for men around the world in her career as a dominatrix and video maker.
