Many jobs are posted for public viewing, but a lot of them are not. They\u2019re filled internally or from within a manager\u2019s network. And even if you do find the perfect position posted online, having a contact who works at the company is definitely going to boost your chances of getting your application in front of the right person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do you go about networking? Try these approaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Leverage LinkedIn<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn is a great place to start building connections in a world that is more virtual than ever. Just make sure your profile is up-to-date. If you are new to LinkedIn, or haven\u2019t used it much, that\u2019s okay. At the bottom of this section, you can download an easy to use checklist to help get your LinkedIn profile in great shape. As you work on your profile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathforward.org\/should-you-call-out-your-career-break-on-linkedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here are some tips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you aren\u2019t sure how to address your career break on LinkedIn. Be sure to explore some of the lesser known features, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathforward.org\/ask-tami-3-asking-for-recommendations-from-your-network-on-linkedin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">getting LinkedIn recommendations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find out how they can help your job search.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Get information<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Networking can also be a pivotal part of figuring out what kind of job is best for you. By talking with friends, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathforward.org\/ask-tami-9-how-to-reach-out-to-old-colleagues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old colleagues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and acquaintances you can learn about different roles that exist in your career or outside of it and what skills are required.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathforward.org\/new-year-new-job-doing-informational-interviews-the-right-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tap into other people\u2019s knowledge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pick their brain, and ask questions. Most people are willing and happy to share information.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Network everywhere<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cast your net wide when networking. When you volunteer at your local park, attend a faith-based group, wait at school pick-up, or take part in a book club, use the opportunity to let your circle know about your job search. These kinds of activities offer a chance to network in a conversational way that, for many people, is more enjoyable than a formal networking event. The more you connect with people, the better your chances of getting a tip, advice, referral, name, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathforward.org\/professional-references-without-work-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and maybe even an interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Get your pitch perfect\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your goal is to build relationships, whether it happens in-person or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathforward.org\/five-ways-to-connect-and-grow-your-network-virtually\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtually<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As you start networking, be sure to have your elevator pitch ready. This is a short introduction that gives just enough information to catch someone\u2019s interest, but not too much to bore them. Sounds easy, right? It can actually be harder than you think to do this on the spot, so take some time to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathforward.org\/nail-your-elevator-pitch-by-telling-your-story-with-confidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get your pitch perfect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before you start networking. Be sure to include a few sentences <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathforward.org\/3-essential-tips-for-talking-about-your-career-gap-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about your break<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because you might be asked about it and need to be prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Path Forward Community<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Looking for a low-risk place to perfect your networking skills? Practice your pitch as you get to know people, ask questions and offer support to others along their journey!<\/p>\n<h2><b>Show gratitude<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And remember, expressing gratitude goes a long way. Always send a follow-up \u201cthank you\u201d or \u201cso nice to meet you\u201d email. We promise it will be appreciated and remembered. And so will you!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that successful networking isn\u2019t just about your agenda. It\u2019s about being open and honest and forging relationships. It\u2019s not \u201cwhat can you do for me\u201d but about getting to know people and letting them get to know you.
