Overview

American Spaces are open-access learning and gathering places around the world that promote interaction – both in-person and virtual – among local audiences and the United States. More than 600 American Spaces are located in universities, shopping malls, libraries and other public places, as well as on embassy compounds, in more than 140 countries. The U.S. commitment to creating spaces for science, innovation, creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit extends across Portugal. We have American Corner partnerships at the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Letters; University of Lisbon’s Technical Institute; Nova University’s Faculty of Science and Technology; University of Aveiro; University of Porto’s Faculty of Letters; and, University of Azores.

American Corners give the public access to programs and scientific databases through the eLibraryUSA facility, as well as books, movies, and magazines. They are platforms for providing information and engagement through diversified programs, such as:

• Talks and presentations by American and Portuguese academics and professionals on a range of topics from science, technology, engineering, literature, arts, culture, and career skills – offered live and virtually
• Films, discussions, and programs on entrepreneurship, leadership, current events, international affairs, and American arts and cultural performances
• Computer lab with desk top computers with internet access for public use including research on any subject, webinars, online courses, or just e-mail and chat
• Laptops with internet access (must present a second form of ID to staff which will be returned upon surrender of the laptop) for use only on premises
• Free access to hands on workshops by experts at our Spaces equipped with high-end computers and software along with 3D printers and scanners, virtual reality equipment, training and resource lending for short intervals
• Audiovisual room for viewing movies, news and U.S. television programs
• Collaboration space for working in groups
• Reading rooms with reference materials, non-fiction and fiction books, and magazines
• Academic research assistance and access to academic databases including eLibrary (Please see the list of scientific databases available at: https://elibraryusa.state.gov/)
• Educational advising for those who want to study in the U.S. or learn about U.S. colleges, universities and exchange opportunities
