The Department of State advises U.S. citizens not to travel to Somalia due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health issues, kidnapping, and piracy.  The U.S. government has extremely limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Somalia due to the lack of a permanent consular presence in Somalia.

The U.S. embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, currently covers consular services for U.S. citizens in Somalia.  When security allows, Embassy Nairobi consular officers visit to accept passport and consular report of birth abroad applications in Mogadishu. To request an appointment in Mogadishu, please send an email to [email protected].

To receive updates from the consular section, please register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov and follow our WhatsApp channel here.
