	Mountain Hardwear Brand Identity

Founded by a small group of industry iconoclasts in 1993, Mountain Hardwear gained credibility and praise from outdoor enthusiasts everywhere.On the heels of a four-year journey around new internal alignment, a reenergized product strategy and a desire to connect with a wider audience across more outdoor verticals, Mountain Hardwear was ready to refresh its brand positioning and modernize its identity.
The name Mountain Hardwear inhabits the spirit of people who are passionate about outdoor adventures and well-engineered gear. Marrying a daring spirit and responsible, thoughtful craftsmanship of outdoor equipment, we anchored the brand personality in a dynamic tension between wild and wise—resonating with outdoor enthusiasts and athletes alike, and expressed in messaging across five fields of play: camp, climb, mountaineering, trail and alpine sports.
We worked closely with the Mountain Hardwear team to develop a new identity, grounded in a revitalized purpose, positioning and tone of voice, and brought to life with an evolution of the logo, new art direction, brand color, and a custom typographic family that is based on the iconic geometric elements of the Mountain Hardwear nut.

    	A typeface born out of the symbol
We developed a custom typeface at Gretel, named Hardwear, that combines the rugged precision of technical engineering with the comforting confidence one feels when geared up in Mountain Hardwear. The Hardwear type family is a visual extension of the company's longstanding symbol, which has been part of its identity since the beginning: it draws on the combination of a hard outside with a soft interior, which was a reoccurring theme in wood type from the late 1800s. We’ve extended this metaphor of hard and soft to develop a broad range of styles that allows us to convey a spectrum of attitudes, from straightforward and technical to direct and irreverent. We worked with foundry SuperContinente to complete the lowercase, font production and hinting. Every design element conceptually and visually reinforces the next, all powered by the idea of wild engineering. The supporting Quadrant Text and Mono are subtle references to maps and topographic notations, adding an important typographic texture that contrasts the boldness of Hardwear.

Art direction inspiring people to get out there—
A lot of care went into defining art direction style that focuses on highlighting moments of true human connection and emotion, reframing the usual outdoor lens of the lone wolf, to focus more on shared experiences captured in ways that invite the viewer into the frame.Ahead of the brand relaunch, the Mountain Hardwear marketing team has extended the identity in new and surprising ways, bringing to life the brand principles through photoshoots.

The company's longstanding symbol, which has been a part of its identity since its origins, is unique and carries a lot of recognition in the outdoor space.The geometry of the symbol has been streamlined to obtain a stable square, which accentuates the angles present throughout the identity both in the typeface and graphic forms. For the evolution of “Hardwear”, we worked with SuperContinente foundry to make the overall letterforms of the script (based on Roger Excoffon’s Mistral) simpler and more consistent in weight and proportion. The word “Mountain” is now typeset using our custom typeface.

	
	Fields of Play—
The color palette was extended beyond the core brand colors, Black, Gray, and Sun Yellow in order to differentiate and clarify the various product offerings at Mountain Hardwear.In addition to color, a series of base particles are used to create badges and dynamic patterns that are specific to each field of play. Typography also reinforces this difference, with the weight of the font responding to the altitude of the activity: heavier layers are worn in mountaineering, therefore the weight in use is Hardwear Extrabold.

	A re-imagined digital framework—
A comprehensive digital system was developed to articulate the identity natively on the web, while maintaining the vital eCommerce function. Modules and buttons feature the signature chamfered corners, reinforced by the use of custom typeface. The main brand color, Sun Yellow, is used throughout as a signifier of interaction.

Built for Function—
The design system for Mountain Hardwear was devised to make information clear and accessible. A set of icons accompanies the typeface, sharing geometry and weight, which convey technical characteristics like “Waterproof” or “Recycled”, insuring visual consistency across more utilitarian settings.

	Bacàn Restaurant Identity &#38;amp; Signage
	Bacàn is an Italian restaurant in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In January 2024, they reopened their doors with renewed energy, culinary ideas and a restructured interior. Pentagram partner Andrea Trabucco-Campos and team developed a new visual identity and environmental graphics to signal the restaurant's unique Italian roots, while standing apart from the overcrowded NYC landscape of other restaurants in that genre.

The visual concept simply emerges from the name: in Northern Italy, the word Bacàn stands for the loud sound of a great dinner party. The brand identity uses letterforms as sound waves: expanding, colliding and overlapping—a playful capture of that boisterous energy. The use of black and white, positive and negative, establishes a bold typographic texture that rhymes with early Futurist (with a special nod to Fortunato Depero) and mid-century op-art forms, an unequivocally Italian vernacular.

	The custom typeface, Grand Bacàn Sans, is inspired by wood and metal typefaces that permeated the visual language of Italy in the early 1900s, with their combination of pure geometry and heavy weights that achieve an impactful, yet approachable visual tone of voice.
Grand Bacàn Sans is built with three styles embodying different volume levels: from loud to loudest, the typeface changes getting bolder. The styles can be combined to achieve a playful &#38;amp; expressive setting that allows for dynamic typographic compositions.

	The identity fluctuates from states of order to chaos, resembling the experience of a dinner from the moment the food is first served to when the check arrives and the table is coated with plates. 
The custom typeface is complemented with Piek by Optimo, a highly legible slab serif with personality that feels both old &#38;amp; new, and Battling by 205TF.
The graphic language is extended into small illustrations that build on the language of overlap, which when expanded to their loudest create abstract compositions that feel like op-art. This tension between communication and abstraction is at the heart of the visual interest for the identity.

Brand Identity
Evolving a 145-year-old creative institution with its community


Founded in Providence in 1877, Rhode Island School of Design is one of the leading art and design schools in the world. Known for its cross-disciplinary approach to art and design pedagogy, RISD has always attracted students who are interested in making while critically engaging with culture and producing ideas that impact the future.

  In recent years the school entered a transformation that involved deeper, structural commitments to evolve and open up—to a wider range of creative voices and practices, to the decolonization of histories and knowledge, and to new applications of design disciplines and technologies that would attract the next generation of aspiring creative minds.  

Over the course of a year, my team at Gretel partnered with RISD and research agency ON ROAD to build an identity framework that ties all parts of the institution together, amplifying the voices of this diverse and distinctive community.

	Built with the RISD Community
We developed this Identity openly with the RISD community, sharing every step on a microsite we designed &#38;amp; built, and through open forums where we would present to the community and have open discussions about the work.


 A Custom Typographic Voice

A RISD education revolves around the power of questioning, doing so in ways in which leads to creating, and then questioning again. It’s a continuous cycle, which moves from incomplete to complete and back again. This led us to develop a custom typeface that captures all the states of completion, and which felt both future facing, while at home in Providence’s rich history.

After an extensive exploration that yielded over 105 font prototypes, a custom super family of typefaces was drawn by a RISD alum, Ryan Bugden (GD 14), who I collaborated closely with, checking in with the RISD and Gretel teams throughout the development.

	Evolving The Seal

The RISD seal contains so much of what’s alive at RISD: a rich history, a visual mark rooted in craft, and a timeless piece of design. Drawn in 1951 by sculptor, stone carver, calligrapher and late RISD faculty member John Howard Benson, the RISD seal is a cornerstone of the identity, which is proudly loved and used by its community.

The seal, which serves as RISD’s logo, was redrawn by Ryan Bugden in consultation with the Benson family to perform better at small sizes by lessening its density, improving the clarity of letterforms and reviving the calligraphic details that had been lost over the decades. Ryan looked closely at its analog past in order to evolve it for the future.

	BriefRebrand one of the largest financial institutions in the world, building on its heritage while positioning it as a peer amongst the leading technology companies.

Solution
The new Mastercard identity system aims at simplifying, focusing and unifying the brand. The goal is to make Mastercard’s visual voice conﬁdent, clear and direct.

I led the design team building the identity system, under creative direction by Pentagram’s partner, Luke Hayman. Logo was designed by Hamish Smyth under creative direction by Michael Bierut.

	The Mastercard identity was developed to articulate itself consistently across multiple areas of communication. All the elements stem visually and conceptually from the same principles, which allow them to be easily combined .

	What if Noguchi sculpted the letter N? Or Hilma af Klint painted her own initial?

Artificial Typography is an unexpected A to Z in typography and the history of art—a visual journey of a conversation with cutting-edge AI engine, MidJourney. The designers’ role is shifted by this process from creator to curator and provoker through language. Letterforms were generated as if the artist themselves had done it, which resulted in re-imagining what a letterform can be. For example, the AI was prompted with: “Letter B by Louise Bourgeois, crochet”, resulting in an unlikely and unexpected letter /B.

Published by Vernacular, the limited edition book contains 52 artists, and 26 letters, and it is a physical manifestation of a deeply digital process.

Vernacular, founded in 2022, is a small independent publisher with a focus on the intersection of form, typography and visual culture that stretch beyond the commonly agreed registers of “good design.” 

Vernacular is run by Andrea A. Trabucco-Campos and Martín Azambuja.

	Irvington Theater 
Brand Identity
	BriefFirst opened in 1902, Irvington Theater has become one of the cultural hearts of the Hudson Rivertowns, New York. In 2019 the Theater Commission built new ambitions for their programming. The aim became to showcase the diverse range &#38;amp; wealth of events produced by the Theater and their Arts Partners, revitalize and centralize their brand identity in a way that could be executed by their newly assemble internal team.

SolutionThe brand identity is designed to capture the cultural energy flowing through the Theater: inspired by the visual language of old-school advertisement and wheatpaste posters, we created a system based on two main elements—layering and vernacular typography.
Layering is a metaphor of the passage of time, achieved both through stacking &#38;amp; color. The wood-inspired typography captures the vibrance of the varied cultural personalities passing through the Irvington Theater.
Finally, we simplified the naming from Irvington Town Hall Theater to Irvington Theater, which is more direct &#38;amp; memorable.

	The logo is typeset in a custom-drawn typeface developed for Irvington Theater.


Irvington Modern Gothic is a revival of Modern Gothic, which originated with Barnhart Brothers &#38;amp; Spindler around 1897. It appears to be a modernization of older nineteenth-century gothics, although it has considerable resemblance to the much later European design, Helvetica Bold (1957).
It’s neutral yet solid feel was a perfect complement to the expression of the display wood-inspired typefaces by The Pyte Foundry, which are a nod to the rich history of wheatpaste posters that littered the walls of cities in the Nineteenth century.

	The color palette captures the rich diversity of programming, infusing energy and boldness to the identity.

The always black type on color background is a nod at small town color printers that used affordable color papers with whom Irvington Theater used to print before they went out of business.

	As iFF Fall ’18 Season
	As iFF (All Shorts Irvington Film Festival) is a festival that takes place on Irvington-on-Hudson, NY, twice a year. 
Each season the dozen or so short films that are showcased follow a cohesive theme curated by the As iFF committee. The season’s campaign is designed following the trail established by the theme: the design intent is always to re-image the theme and achieve a typographic interpretation of it using the custom font, Isola.The Fall ‘18 theme was “Film As Dream”. The design for the campaign captures that hazy, in-between moment when one wakes up or falls asleep: things come into (or out of) focus.


A special thanks to my talented friend Javier Arizu for being a constant soundboard, always willing to talk about concepts and design.

	The backgrounds are blends of colors loosely inspired by landscapes: these colors morph from one another in the animations, much like imaginary scenes change in dreams.
The soundtrack developed by Brian Parker was also built to reinforce this ethereal feeling.


	There were 11 shorts this year: an animation of each title, director and origin was developed to introduce a new short film while in the theater. Brian Parker’s soundtrack was synced to each piece.

	As in the years prior, the custom typeface Isola Compressed was used as the display typeface of the identity.

	Cover LetteringThe book's title is rendered in custom lettering that uses Rauschen Max (a revival of Max Bill's iconic letterforms) as a starting point. Letterforms have been tweaked to extend the metaphor across the two words (Odd Apples), and rendered in a wide gamut of colors derived from the photographic palette.

	Interior Typography
The interior of book is typeset in HB Set and Rauschen B, two typefaces that are slightly softened, reminiscent of type printed in food products that may soften due to weather or lower quality printing. This softness combines with the photography to create a feeling of warmth and comfort.

	Story
Apples are the most common and pervasive fruit: everyone knows what an apple is.


Through photographs of rare &#38;amp;&#38;nbsp;curious apples, “Odd Apples” expands our perception of apples, what they look like and what they taste like.

As a personal hobby,&#38;nbsp;William Mullan discovered, collected, and tasted lesser known apples. 


He paid homage to them in the best way he knew: by photographing them and creating color harmonies.

“Odd Apples” is a large format photo book showcasing a selection of these photographs.
Awarded a&#38;nbsp;TDC Certificate of Typographic Excellence 2019.

Featured in T Magazine , Cool Hunting and Typewolf.

	The photographs were printed on exceptional Munken paper by one of the best art printers in the world, Pureprint, based in the UK.

Only 200 have been printed&#38;nbsp;of this limited run 1st edition.&#38;nbsp;Each edition has been hand numbered.
