One of the biggest advantages of building a global team is understanding how different salary markets work. Most founders don’t realise how wide the gap is until they compare it directly. A senior frontend engineer in the US will cost anywhere between $150,000 and $180,000 a year. A senior frontend engineer in Nigeria with strong ownership, great communication, and similar experience typically earns $36,000 to $50,000. Once you see that difference clearly, a few things become obvious: You’re not paying for quality, you’re paying for geography, and geography is not a skill. This isn’t about finding “cheap” talent, that’s the wrong framing entirely. It means building a team without sacrificing your budget or compromising on capability. A global approach allows you to hire senior contributors who deliver great work without the financial strain of hiring only in one of the most expensive talent markets in the world. The talent market isn’t shrinking, it’s spreading. And those who understand these benchmarks early always end up with stronger, more resilient teams. Understanding salary markets is often the turning point for founders who feel stuck with local hiring constraints.

👻 Kiro 👻 has had a whole host of great new features recently. There are the really big ones like Skills support and the constant evolution with new models like Opus and Sonnet 4.6, but one of my favourites is ACP... The Agent Client Protocol lets you take advantage of one of the best coding assistants 💪 around and use the underlying agent in a variety of different clients. Senior developers at startups? They’re not just banging out code all day. They’re designing features, debating with the product team and maybe even jumping into the customer side of things. I’ve spoken with a bunch who actually love this kind of chaos. Variety, challenge and feeling like they actually own what they do. Autonomy? Big yes. They want the freedom to make decisions without a micromanaging drone over their head at all times. So if your startup expects your senior dev to wear a few hats, just be upfront. “Don’t optimise early” is *right* for software But “don’t optimise ever”? Only if you want bigger bills and more expensive power I’m looking at 5 - controversial - ways software engineering could do better this week. Number 1 is “optimisation”. The maxim most people know is “Don’t optimise early!” And that’s right. Otherwise you’ll waste time and money almost all of the time. But “don’t optimise EVER”? A big mistake. These days, many people feel that it’s cheaper, easier, quicker (pick any you want) to just throw more cloud resources at a problem. And some application spaces, like LLM construction. often rely directly on pure brute force. (Honourable mention to all teams developing more cost-conscious approaches though!) Because - and this isn’t just about AI and LLMs - hugely increasing cloud usage and forecast usage is… ⚠️ driving up electricity prices [plus factors too, of course] ⚠️ creating water scarcity ⚠️ costing more money! What’s your take - is optimisation a thing of the past, or should it be growing in importance?
