From March 31 to April 3, 2026, Artcurial’s Brussels office, renowned for presenting exceptional works to the public ahead of its major Paris sales, unveils the exhibition 20th Century. Spring Highlights. Bringing together artists who profoundly transformed our way of seeing and representing the world, this presentation offers a journey through the twentieth century, from the sensitive observation of reality to the boldness of abstraction and contemporary creation. Through a selection of major works, the exhibition highlights the invention of new forms and the gradual affirmation of an increasingly free artistic subjectivity. A discreet nod to Belgium also runs through the selection, notably with a composition by Serge Poliakoff in black, yellow and red – recalling the colours of the national flag – alongside a work by Rik Wouters, a major figure of Belgian modernity, both drawn from Belgian collections.

Designing Childhood. A History of Design for Children
As a testing ground for new materials and production processes, children’s furniture has left its mark on the history of 20th-century design. It embodies the ambitions, social changes and technological advances of its era. Gradually recognised as individuals in their own right, children are no longer seen as ‘little adults’ and have carved out a specific place for themselves in the home, society and the market.
As explorers of the world, children learn, play and express themselves through the objects that populate their daily lives. After the Second World War, home design evolved: children’s bedrooms and playrooms appeared, offering young children spaces conducive to creativity and imagination. Furniture then became a tool for learning as much as a means of emancipation.
Designers found children’s furniture to be a privileged field for experimentation. In the 1960s, the rise of polymers paved the way for new forms, free from traditional constraints. These materials made it possible to invent lightweight, ergonomic and playful furniture without sharp angles. Many designers embraced this field: Jean Prouvé, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Hans Wegner, Charles and Ray Eames, Nanna Ditzel, Bruno Munari, Javier Mariscal and, more recently, Stéphanie Marin, each offering a vision of childhood as a field of experimentation and freedom.
In this new collaboration, the Design Museum Brussels enriches the narrative initiated by the Centre Pompidou by highlighting the Belgian contribution. Through pieces from its collections, the museum emphasises the vitality of design in Belgium, in resonance with major international narratives. It reveals an approach that is attentive to children’s needs, integrating ecological and educational issues from an early stage. From children’s bedrooms designed by Sylvie Feron in the 1930s to Jules Wabbes, to the current initiatives of the ecoBirdy duo with the Charlie chair made from recycled plastic, Belgian designers also introduce childlike singularity into the domestic space. Thus, design in Belgium reflects a creativity where formal innovation is combined with a reflection on society and the environment.
Today, at a time of new environmental, social and technological challenges, children’s furniture continues to reflect its era. 3D printing, open source, recycled materials and local manufacturing herald a new generation of creative, responsible and accessible furniture.
This universe remains a formidable laboratory where imagination, learning and innovation come together, reminding us that design, at a child’s level, also illuminates our common future.

I am here - je suis là - ik ben hier
I am here invites the public to explore its relationship with self-image, from the long tradition of self-portraiture to today’s digital practices. Through a journey that weaves together art, science and interactive installations, the exhibition probes the social, psychological and political dimensions of self-representation.
Narcissism, identity, media culture, and the visibility of women and minority groups are among the many themes addressed through works spanning the 19th century to the present, alongside new contemporary creations. Developed by the Université libre de Bruxelles in partnership with the City of Brussels, this free, trilingual exhibition offers a playful, thought-provoking and accessible experience for all. Hosted at the Espace Vanderborght, it highlights Belgian collections and showcases Brussels-based artists, notably through an open call. A mediation programme, participatory activities and a dedicated library space round out this immersive exploration at the heart of self-representation.

The Mini D Festival was created in 2017 by Marni, Pierre de Lune, Centre Scénique Jeunes Publics de Bruxelles and the Ixelles Culture Department to raise the profile of contemporary dance for young audiences, both at school and within families. Since then, circus arts have naturally found their place in the festival, and there has been a growing desire to include outdoor performances in particular.
This spring marks the 9th edition of this collaboration between Brussels venues and is aimed at babies and children up to 11 years old and above. Adults are also welcome : it's never too early to let yourself be carried away by movement !

Postcolonial?
The House of European History explores Europe’s colonial legacy in its new temporary exhibition “Postcolonial?”
Starting with the structural foundations of European colonialism, going through how Europeans preserved power as their empires collapsed and in what manner that affected newly independent countries, the exhibition takes us to present times. It invites us to reflect on the ways colonial history still shapes life today.
Following the Second World War, colonial power seemed to crumble. From 1945 to the end of the twentieth century, more than 80 colonies overcame European rule and declared independence. After decades or even centuries of resistance to brutal oppression, their victories appeared to mark a decisive break with the past. But appearances can be deceiving.
How did the colonial matrix of power – the ideas, events, inequalities and injustices born of colonialism – continue to shape the modern world?
Unique artworks, historical objects and personal stories accompany the visitor throughout this much-needed European reckoning with colonialism.

Art Brussels
Join the vibrant Belgian contemporary art fair Art Brussels in April, where around 135 leading galleries present their artists and 25.000 visitors gather at the iconic Brussels Expo.
Retaining its youthful profile as a discovery fair, Art Brussels brings together contemporary art galleries among the most important of the international scene, gathered in five sections.
The Prime section includes galleries showcasing top-tier modern and contemporary works. The Solo section highlights presentations dedicated to the work of individual artists, offering an in-depth focus on their practices. ’68 Forward is a new section gathering galleries that celebrates the diversity, experimentation, and boundary-pushing movements that have defined contemporary art since Art Brussels’ founding year in 1968. This section offers a platform for both recognized pioneers and overlooked talents.
In the Discovery section, galleries champion emerging international artists, focusing on single-artist presentations or compelling dialogues between two under-recognized creators whose work constitutes a true ‘discovery’ for European collectors. Finally, a new section, Horizons, will feature a new scenography built around several large-scale works. These ambitious pieces create a space for “breathing and reflection,” embodying Art Brussels’ curatorial vision to offer a structured and rigorous perspective on bold contemporary propositions.
