Work-Based Learning (WBL): Connecting Students to Real Careers
Work-Based Learning (WBL) is a powerful partnership between Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), WorkSource Montgomery, and local employers. The program gives high school students hands-on job experience, helping them explore careers, gain skills, and build connections that can shape their futures. At the same time, businesses benefit from fresh talent, early workforce development, and a chance to shape the next generation.

What WBL Offers
- Real-World Experience – Students gain on-the-job training through mini internships (under 75 hours), internships, (75 hours or more) youth apprenticeships, job shadowing, and mentorship in high-demand industries.
- Career Exploration & Readiness – Participants explore career interests and develop the soft skills and confidence needed for long-term success.
- Employer-Led Opportunities – Businesses co-design learning experiences, mentor students, and build a pipeline of skilled, motivated future employees.
- High School Apprenticeships – Through Apprenticeship Montgomery, employers can train and employ students for at least 450 hours over 1–2 years—with financial incentives available.

Why It Matters
- For Students: A chance to step out of the classroom and into a real career path.
- For Employers: A strategic way to grow your talent pipeline and support the local community.
- For Our Region: A stronger, more connected workforce aligned with the needs of today’s economy.
