Hypermedia Systems Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars (218)

Learn how hypermedia, the revolutionary idea that created The Web, can be used today to build modern, sophisticated web applications today, often at a fraction of the complexity of popular JavaScript frameworks.

In this book we will explore a simpler approach to building applications on the Web and beyond with htmx and Hyperview, two technologies that embrace hypermedia as a system architecture. We will look at what a
hypermedia system is comprised of and what makes it special when compared with other system architectures. We will then look at how htmx, a modern hypermedia-oriented front end library, makes it possible to build sophisticated user experiences using hypermedia. Finally, we will look at Hyperview, a modern hypermedia system for building mobile applications.

While the book does touch on the theory of hypermedia and provides an overview of the language and concepts around it, it is also
packed with practical and simple examples that you can immediately apply and modify for your own applications.

Hypermedia was a great idea. It still is!

After reading this book, you will have the tools necessary to apply this revolutionary approach to software to your own projects and application.

This is The Future of Web Development: Practical, Elegant, and Accessible
5 out of 5 stars
This is The Future of Web Development: Practical, Elegant, and Accessible
This book is an absolute game-changer for anyone passionate about web development and the future of hypermedia-driven applications. It dives deep into the core principles of building responsive, scalable, and dynamic web applications using modern hypermedia techniques. What makes this book particularly valuable is how it resonates with developers who’ve been in the field for decades—those who’ve transitioned from server-side MVC patterns to client-side SPAs, all while navigating the endless changes in libraries, frameworks, and dependencies. The author understands these challenges and provides a thoughtful approach to help you embrace the next evolution of the web. And the beauty of it all is how easy it is to understand. The simple pieces fit together into an elegantly designed framework that feels like magic under the hood, yet you don’t necessarily need to understand every detail to reap its benefits. It’s the kind of design that works with you, not against you. I initially bought the Kindle edition but was so engaged that I ended up buying the paperback one too. It’s one of those books you’ll want to keep within arm’s reach, as both a guide and a source of inspiration. With clear explanations and practical examples, this book isn’t just a guide—it’s a roadmap to staying ahead in a rapidly evolving web landscape. If you’re committed to delivering user-first, highly interactive experiences, this is an essential read.

First, this is awesomely well written, so much so that this warrants top billing in this review. What a pleasure to read!

Second, I knew a lot about HTMX from watching hours of YouTube, from talks by Carson to tutorials by others. I wonder whether I’d get much more from buying the book. I did! In particular, I understand many of the fundamental underlying concepts, e.g., HATEOS, much better.

Third, the exposition of pros and cons, and limitations of each, is very well balanced. That’s refreshing! The authors acknowledge that their approach isn’t optimal for every use case.

I highly recommend the book if ditching the JavaScript-forward approach to web applications appeals to you.

Read the first two parts on web development, part three is about mobile application development, which I am not interested in.

Overall this is a very well written technical book both initiating the reader into the thinking of hypermedia applications and also showing how to practically build such applications in the HTMX framework and other supporting technologies.

The style is nice, both professional, but also with a light air of levity: like talking to a knowledgeable and friendly work colleague.

With part of the mission of the book being to persuade the reader to develop in a new paradigm the writers are both persuasive in their arguments, but not overbearing. They trust the intelligence and expertise of the reader to be able to interface with the concepts presented and come to their own conclusions.

The example project is complete and well structured. The progression was logical and introduces new concepts of the framework at a natural rate. At times I felt that the book was moving slower than my rate of comprehension, but I believe this is appropriate for the goals a introductory text.

By the end of my reading I have a firm understanding of the landscape of HTMX and feel initiated enough to begin implementing for my own projects. It leaves me excited to get my hands dirty and with the new conceptual paradigm given.

    --

That all said, on content I give the book five stars, but the physical execution lacks the polish I expect in a hardcover technical book produced by three very serious people. I encountered multiple cases in my reading where content seemed to have been dropped between page boundaries. Additionally I found that in one code example towards the end of part two I believe that the wrong code was printed.

These mistakes detract from a quite excellent work and are hard to overlook. They definitely slowed down my reading, though I did not find any of the mistakes fatal. With careful reading and applying some critical thinking I could figure out the missing context and for the most part the meaning was not lost.

It feels as though the physical version of the book could have gone through one more proof read with a attention to detail.

    --

These issues aside, I highly recommend anyone who has become intrigued with HTMX to pickup this book and read it. It is a wonderful introduction! I looked forward to seeing a second edition where the wrinkles are ironed out.

HATEOAS (and in particular tools such as HTMX that support the approach for modern application development) can, for many types of projects, address several of the “hells” of modern SPA development. I’d recommend this book to anyone who needs to develop modern “forms over data” or MVC style business apps with limited UI interactivity requirements (greenfield projects or legacy ports all the more) and who desire to provide more business value (both initially and post-release) with fewer programmers while, frankly, bringing some of the joy back to the development and evolution of the kinds of apps (which is to say many) for which HATEOAS is wholly or largely appropriate.

After I read this book I started building my software with robust HATEOS principles. That allowed me to avoid API churn and constant maintenance. I was able to spend more time with my family thanks to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars La importancia de HYPER-media

    Hypermedia Systems is a smooth read that nicely balances theory, examples and history;
the excitement of htmx makes it a page turner!

Future web devs will probably ask why we turned Facebook's component library into an all-doing framework.
