Seeing the big picture

The aim of our work is to ensure high-performance infrastructure while simultaneously providing support for the climate-resilient and environmentally responsible development of Germany’s federal waterways designed to be as nature-based as possible. In our work, the waterways’ various functions within society for transport, water management, and leisure and recreation are key. Our activities focus particularly on Germany’s federal waterways, i.e. the major rivers, canals and coastal waters. We primarily advise the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) and the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), but we also provide guidance to other government departments and third parties.

Water knows no barriers – and the same should apply to good science

2026.03.20

Held on 22 March every year since 1993, the United Nations World Water Day explores the importance of water in all sectors of society. This year, it is reminding us that water unites us all – and that genuine solutions can only be found when people work together as equals. The 2026 edition of the UN World Water Development Report reaches the same conclusion. Accordingly, the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) is focusing on the question of how we can achieve equal opportunities in science.

Frost and ice on canals – BfG ice forecasts ensure planning security

2026.01.27

Due to the continuing icy temperatures, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) has been using icebreakers on the Mittelland Canal, the Elbe-Havel Canal and other German federal waterways, such as the Elbe and Oder. The ice could become more extensive in the coming days. BfG is assisting the WSV by providing ice forecasts to support its ice warning service and predictive ice control.
