In November, software developer jobs were safe. By February, they weren't. David Carter, who was Elon Musk's boss at Microsoft, told me that on this week's Executive Conversations and I haven't stopped thinking about it. Dave was 26 when they gave him an 18-year-old intern who hadn't started university. That intern was Elon Musk. Since then Dave has built a VC-backed startup funded by Greylock, nearly sold to Salesforce, and now runs Innovation Factory in Hamilton helping hundreds of entrepreneurs scale every year. He's watched PCs replace typewriters. Desktop publishing replace hot type. E-commerce replace brick and mortar. And now AI. His take: this movie has been played many times. The actors change, but the plot always ends the same. Five things from this conversation I keep coming back to: ✅ The Informed Fearlessness Test. Elon didn't jump blind. He sketched ideas on napkins and they looked possible from a technology perspective. Fearless without first principles is just fast. ✅ Carter's End-to-End Rule. The business is not the product. The invention part is still pretty small. The real business is getting the customer, keeping them delighted, and servicing the whole system. ✅ "We can make mistakes faster is the problem." AI lets you build anything in a weekend. Critical thinking is now the most important AI leadership skill. Not prompting. Not coding. Thinking. ✅ "Money isn't the only answer anymore." One entrepreneur built an AI agent that auto-generates competitor battle cards weekly. That used to require raising venture capital just to hire an analyst. ✅ Your frustrated customer is about to become your competitor. A dentist fed up with 1990s billing software is going to vibe code their own replacement and sell it to every other dentist. And it's happening now, not in five years. The line I keep coming back to: "Just because you can doesn't mean you should. And that decision of should I is critical thinking."
