𝗔 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘂𝘀𝗲... That’s the situation Jeffrey Savina, LiDAR Specialist at geoConvergence, describes in this Reality Check-In from Geo Week 2026. He’s working on a project in the L.A. area right now. More than 𝟮𝟱𝟬 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘀 and close to 𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀. 𝙃𝙚’𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙩 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙤. That’s a big part of why 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗩𝗶𝘀 𝗩𝗟𝗫 matters for him. He talks about having used terrestrial scanners before. Tight spaces, ceiling tiles, more involved setups. In comparison, having something wearable that 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 makes a clear difference on a project of this size. He’s also very positive about the data quality. Asked whether he’s pleased with what he’s getting out of NavVis VLX 3 compared with other tools he’s used, his answer is 𝙖 𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙮𝙚𝙨. He points to a few things in particular: ➕ the automation in dataset processing ➕ the support from the NavVis team ➕ and geoConvergence's use of NavVis IVION The 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗩𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗢𝗡 part comes through strongly on the client side as well. Jeffrey says that 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗴 𝗶𝗻, 𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. On the deliverable side, geoConvergence does a lot of asset extraction. They use machine learning to extract equipment assets from the point cloud and integrate that into an 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗚𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹. So in this case, the point cloud isn’t always the final deliverable. But it still needs to be 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 enough to support everything that comes after. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗩𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. 👇 𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙅𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙬 👇

𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 Ramboll’s Annika Debes Vestergaard 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻, 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆. As an early tester of 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗩𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗟𝗫 in the Nordics, Ramboll also brought a particularly practical perspective on how that approach is evolving. What Annika described was a 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵. 🟢 Start with the purpose. 🟢 Define the accuracy and level of detail needed. 🟢 Understand the access conditions. 🟢 Plan the data management early, so the output fits the 𝗕𝗜𝗠, 𝗚𝗜𝗦, 𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗔𝗗 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 that follow. All of which sounds straightforward, but doing these things well is what turns scanning from data collection into something teams can actually use. The project Annika shared to put it all into context was a 𝗮 𝟮𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗺² (~𝟮𝟭𝟱,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝗾 𝗳𝘁) 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, including basement areas, office space, storefronts, attic space, roof, and facade. The aim was to check whether the existing drawings were still accurate and to create a reliable basis for the next design phase and the building’s energy renovation. To help, Ramboll combined methods without losing coherence in the workflow. ✅ 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗩𝗶𝘀 𝗩𝗟𝗫 was used for the larger interior and exterior areas, where coverage and efficiency mattered most. ✅ 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗩𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗟𝗫 was used in the attic, where the space was tight and not full height, and where capturing from multiple angles was important, especially around 𝗠𝗘𝗣 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. ✅ A terrestrial laser scanner was used selectively for the exterior spiral staircases. ✅ Drone photogrammetry was used for the roof. In this case, the different datasets were brought together in 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗩𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗢𝗡 so they could be 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱, 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱, 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲. That turned a mixed capture approach into one project resource instead of a set of disconnected files. Another point that came through clearly in the presentation is that Annika did not frame scanning as a one-off step at the beginning of a project. She described it as something Ramboll uses from 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, and then potentially again after renovation so the client can carry the data forward into facility management and operations.
