Yesterday we announced our initial Brass Knuckle Films slate. We launched our company one year ago at SXSW with our platform on Republic, talks at the convention center and Fast Company house, and a party on the Troublemaker Studio backlot. We’re at it again today with the second annual SXSW fiesta, where we will celebrate 30th anniversary of From Dusk Till Dawn and announce the winner of our Best Logline Wins contest for our investors. DEADLINE announced it! RepublicFilm is partnering with Peter Diamandis' Future Vision XPRIZE, Google, and Range Media Partners on a $3M global competition to make the next great optimistic sci-fi film. A16Z's Ben Horowitz, Ripple's Jed McCaleb, Ark's Cathie Wood, @Balaji S., Rod Roddenberry are backing it too. And through RepublicFilm, the winning film will have the opportunity to invite global sci-fi fans to invest and share in its profit potential. The idea: what if you could have owned a piece of the original Star Trek IP? I thought about that while listening to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on Joe Rogan earlier this year, and it hit me. Their company is called Artists Equity, but we are creating a new category: AUDIENCE EQUITY. And when you enable the audience to invest, a powerful paradigm shift happens: - Filmmakers retain more financial control, IP ownership, and creative independence. - They build a direct connection to their audience from day one. - Fan-investors become evangelists throughout development and production. - This creates built-in audience demand, which matters in distribution conversations. - Organic buzz can reduce costly traditional P&A. - It drives success upon release as audience-investors tell their friends and family to watch the film, because they have skin in the game. I know we hear it all day: we are living through massive industry change. YouTube has overtaken Disney. AI is disrupting production. Creators are rewriting distribution (just look at Markiplier's Iron Lung!). Yet film financing is stuck in the past. For most filmmakers, the only two ways to get a movie made are: 1) find wealthy insiders, or 2) take a studio deal that owns your upside. These small circles still control who the next David Lynch will be, or which film becomes the next Napoleon Dynamite, while everyday fans who live and breathe these films have never had a seat at the table. We're creating a third path of 'fan capital'. We officially launched Republic Film in late 2024. Today, 40,000 fan-investors have invested over $32M into premium projects from Eli Roth, Robert Rodriguez, Pressman Film, Ron Perlman, and Skybound Entertainment. This isn't just a win for creative independence--it's a wider market trend. Retail investors are hungrier than ever for access to previously gatekept opportunities like tech and venture. Film was similarly an asset class reserved for the wealthiest 1%, but fans now have the power to invest in the ideas they believe in and share in their economic potential.
