📚Weekend Reads : SMART in Action! This week, we’re exploring the many ways SMART is being applied in conservation and we’re particularly excited to highlight a recent publication. 1. Strengthening biodiversity conservation and One Health through ranger monitoring of wildlife health in protected areas Across four countries and dozens of protected areas, this collaboration shows how rangers—already on the front lines—can be equipped to systematically detect and document wildlife health events. By introducing a clear operational definition of “health events,” tailored field forms, and integrating these into the SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) platform, over 200 rangers have recorded more than 1,000 health events. It demonstrates that with relatively modest investments in training, tools, and coordination, we can begin to address one of the most persistent gaps in conservation and One Health: the lack of early-warning systems at the human–wildlife interface. A strong example of how operational conservation can directly contribute to prevention, preparedness, and resilience in an era of increasing ecological and health risk. Rangers are not only stewards of biodiversity, they are key actors in a global wildlife health intelligence system. 👉Read more here : https://lnkd.in/dWJKzePs 2. We are holding our next Quarterly Members Call on March 26 at 3:00 PM (US Eastern). This month’s Spotlight Presentation will feature the SMART–EarthRanger Conservation Alliance (SERCA) — an exciting global collaboration between the SMART Partnership and EarthRanger. SERCA is working to develop an integrated conservation technology platform and global support network designed to equip practitioners with better tools, data, and collaboration opportunities to strengthen conservation impact. The session will also explore potential alignment between SERCA and the Conservation Measures Partnership, particularly around adaptive management and strengthening conservation practice worldwide. Sign up here for a calender invite [https://lnkd.in/g_X2CWkd] We hope to see many of you there! #CMPQuarterlyCall #ConservationMeasuresPartnership Photo by Gernant Magnin

In celebration of International Women's Day and building momentum toward World Female Ranger Week, the International Ranger Federation will host a global Women Ranger Leadership Roundtable exploring a critical question for the future of conservation: what does true visibility and leadership for women rangers look like? While progress has been made, women remain underrepresented across the global ranger workforce - particularly in leadership and decision-making roles. Yet across the world, women rangers are already demonstrating powerful leadership through community engagement, operational expertise, cultural knowledge, and resilience in some of the most challenging conservation environments. This interactive 90-minute roundtable will bring together women rangers, conservation leaders, and allies from around the world to share lived leadership experiences, explore the conditions that enable women to move from presence to influence, and identify practical actions to strengthen leadership pathways within the ranger profession. Through spotlight voices, cross-sector insights, and participant discussions, the session aims to amplify women ranger voices, highlight diverse leadership models, and inspire tangible steps toward a more inclusive, representative, and resilient global ranger workforce. Together, we will explore how elevating women’s leadership strengthens conservation outcomes and helps shape the future of protected and conserved areas worldwide. To accommodate the global time zones 2 round tables will be hosted: SESSION 1: UTC 13:00-14:30 - https://lnkd.in/dqCkpHug SESSION 2: UTC 21:00-22:30 - https://lnkd.in/dfDHN72A #westandwithworldrangers #genderequality #femalerangers

Teamwork makes the dream work. 🫡 We are proud to share the completion of the Operations Room in #Matopos National Park (Zimbabwe). A project delivered through collaboration and relentless commitment. An effective ops room is critical: we like to see it as a nerve-centre that supports conservation on the ground. It exists to: - Support field teams in real time - Coordinate rapid, informed responses - Provide operational oversight - Capture and manage data to drive smarter decision-making The control room was fully renovated and equipped, with EarthRanger configured specifically for Matopos and a #SERCA integration ready to strengthen data collection and analysis. Garmin #InReach patrol tracking and VHF tactical communications are now live, enabling real-time coordination and stronger support to teams on the ground. The ops room completion wraps up supporting anti-poaching operations in Matopos National Park, following months of equipment procurement and 4 weeks of ranger training on site. This achievement would not have been possible without the incredible partnership and support of Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), Rhino Recovery Fund, Dambari Wildlife Trust, and Matopos Conservation Society. We are grateful to our implementing partners who brought technical expertise and execution excellence: OFF-GRID CONSULTING LTD, Meddev, EVERYWHERE Communications, #EarthRanger, and SMART Partnership . And the final word must go to the people who made it happen on the ground: Our outstanding trainers and the dedicated #ZimParks team: Ms Kwanele Kanengoni-Manungo, Mr Thembelani Sibanda and Mr Nyasha Eric Shenje. Collaboration makes a world of difference.

From our director, Jes Lefcourt: "The EarthRanger team and I are devastated to learn of the passing of John Tanui. John has been one of our closest friends since the beginning of the program, as a friend of EarthRanger but, even more so, as a close personal friend of many of us. Everyone who has ever met John knows of his kind, infectious smile and his gentle spirit. He was always eager to share his excitement about his work and about his love of nature. His most recent job had him traveling throughout Africa, teaching rangers and park teams. He would reach out regularly to share videos of the wildlife from the places he was staying, or just to check in. When I would visit Lewa, John and I would occasionally take a drive around after work. It always amazed me how a guy who spent decades in these places could still sit in quiet contemplation with awe, wonder, and appreciation watching wildlife. On one occasion, we were watching a group of lions climbing around on a fallen tree, but I mostly enjoyed John's enthrallment at their agility. I think we watched them for well over an hour. In the course of his career, John met with and briefed many celebrities, from actors and politicians to icons like David Attenborough. Yet I've never seen him as excited as when watching the lions. That's what true love and dedication looks like. I remember the first time I described John to my wife, I told her about this amazing guy who was so knowledgeable, experienced, nice, and 2 meters tall. When she finally met him, she pointed out to me that he's not actually 2 meters. That still surprises me, because he still seems that tall in my mind. That's the John I'll remember - The quiet yet passionate conservationist with a heart of gold who was truly larger than life. We'll miss you, John." World Hippo Day recognises the hippopotamus as a vital guardian of freshwater ecosystems within Sabi Sand Nature Reserve. By shaping riverbanks, fertilising waterways, and supporting aquatic life, hippos play an essential role in maintaining healthy rivers and wetlands. Protecting hippos helps protect the water systems that sustain wildlife across the Reserve. #Worldhippoday #ecosystem #sabisandsnaturereserve
