Really liked something my next journalist interviewee, Kaela Roeder, said. Kaela writes for Technically, which covers local innovation economies in different parts of the country We were talking about her versatility, having previously covered LGBTQ issues, homelessness, and other subjects before transitioning to this beat. "I had a co-worker and she was writing this really intense story about this very complex policy ... And I said to her 'How do you know you'll have all the information you'll need. And she said, I'm a journalist. I'm gonna gather all the information that I can, talk to the people that I can and put out a story that informs people. I take that mindset in this job, covering something that I hadn't covered before. You can't be shy to pick up the phone and learn about what you're covering." Versatility ... it isn't as hard as you think, so long as you work at it. Good lesson for aspiring journalists. Kaela had other good lessons too - another notable one was was about learning to absorb a tough edit because it will make you a better journalist. Never forget to thank your editors. Next episode of The Journalism Salute podcast drops Monday.
