𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲. Today, nearly 70% of the world’s population writes in the Latin alphabet. It spans more than 150 languages, moving across geographies, religions, and worldviews that otherwise share little in common. In doing so, it produces a fragile continuity, a visual familiarity that often precedes understanding. And yet, its spread was neither inevitable nor neutral. Latin letters traveled with empires, with missionaries, with infrastructures of communication, first analog, now digital. At times, they were imposed. At others, they were adopted: taken up by societies seeking to reposition themselves in relation to history, modernity, or the global. From 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗮 to 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗻𝗮𝗺, from 𝗧𝘂̈𝗿𝗸𝗶𝘆𝗲 to 𝗞𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗸𝗵𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻, each shift toward the Latin script marks a moment of negotiation, between what is carried forward and what is left behind between the memory of a language and the future it is asked to inhabit. Script, in the end, is never just about writing. A script can make a people visible to the world but what about the structures within the language itself, the grammatical logics and conceptual architectures that shape how a community thinks, relates, and makes sense of collective life? Three years ago, we launched Voice for Purpose to give back natural-sounding voices to people forced to rely on communication devices to interact with the ones around them in a more natural, personal, and dignified way. At Translated, we believe the true potential of language technology lies in enabling communication between people. But it can do more than that: it can help improve quality of life by preserving self-expression, dignity, and human presence. What began as an intuition has grown into a platform designed to be as accessible and easy to use as possible, with particular care for the needs of people navigating serious health conditions and disabilities. Today, 5,000+ people from around the world have contributed to the project by donating their voices across five languages, 200+ people are actively using an expressive voice powered by our technology, and more than 5 million characters have already been synthesized, in collaboration with a number of clinical centers across Europe. For individuals affected by #ALS, vocal cord paralysis, voice box surgery, and other neurological or medical causes of voice loss, this is a way to recover presence, personality, and connection. Today, #VoiceforPurpose offers not only the possibility to choose an expressive voice, but also, when possible, to preserve one’s own voice in advance, so it can continue to be used later if needed as a condition progresses. The project has also been endorsed by the #WorldHealthOrganization.
