🔎Are businesses identifying and mapping the full extent of nature risks? Grasslands. Savannas. Wetlands. We’re losing them at an alarming rate - between 2005–2020, nearly 4x more of non-forest area was cleared than forest, driven by cattle and annual crops. It’s not just a sustainability issue, but it’s fast becoming a material risk, with the potential to cost nature-dependent industries up to $430 billion a year. 🔗Read our Reuters op-ed co-authored by WRI’s Head of Responsible Supply Chains Caroline Winchester and the Accountability Framework initiative (AFi)’s Leah Samberg to learn why protecting these ecosystems are core to business resilience: https://reut.rs/3OEiA2Y

🏢🌿Nature-based solutions have a lot to offer cities, like: ☀️Reduced extreme heat 💧Improved water security 🌱New green jobs Through a combination of upland foresting and urban greening, watershed restoration efforts are already starting to deliver positive results in three African cities➡️ https://lnkd.in/eVzsj6nJ This #EarthDay, we're putting #SolutionsInFocus around the world to remind you that positive impact is in progress. 🌏 #EarthDay 2026’s theme, #OurPowerOurPlanet, emphasizes the importance of building environmental progress through everyday action. That’s exactly what 2025–2026 WRI Ross Center #PrizeforCities Grand Prize Winner 🏆 Move As One Coalition is doing. An alliance of 142 civil society organizations and 77k+ individuals in 🇵🇭, Move As One unites #city dwellers to push for changes that are making daily journeys more reliable for millions in Manila and beyond. “When people come together, they can shape the future of their cities. The award belongs not only to our coalition, but to every commuter, worker and community member who has spoken up, organized and pushed for a safer, more humane and more inclusive transport system,” 💬 Move As One Coalition National Coordinator Reycel Hyacenth Nacario Bendaña (Hya). This Earth Day, I’ve been thinking about the theme Our Power, Our Planet. For me, that power is something I see everywhere I go. In Kenya, I joined a tree planting—one of millions—in an urban forest honoring Wangari Maathai, a reminder of how local action can shape global change. In Rwanda, I walked through restored wetlands in the heart of the city—reducing floods, creating jobs and making neighborhoods safer. In Colombia, biking through Bogota, I experienced how better integrated sustainable transport systems are connecting people to jobs, reducing pollution and making daily life easier. And in Brazil, I saw firsthand how a growing bioeconomy is creating livelihoods while protecting some of the world’s most important ecosystems. These are just a few snapshots of what’s happening around the world. Every day, World Resources Institute’s staff and partners are working alongside communities to build solutions that make cities more livable, energy more reliable and nature a source of opportunity. That’s the real story of this moment. The solutions exist. They are happening now. And they show that when we put people at the center, we can protect our planet while building a more secure and hopeful future.

🍫🌳Chocolate comes at a steep cost to the world’s forests. Ghana has lost more than 13% of its tree cover to illegal cocoa farming alone. But farmers across Ghana’s Cocoa Belt are finding a better way. Why is it important to put #SolutionsInFocus? It is a reminder that progress is already happening! That gives us something to be optimistic about this #EarthDay. More about this story➡️ https://lnkd.in/egrt-Hax More stories like this➡️ https://lnkd.in/ezYnJcCE

NEWS: Colombia has joined the 100% Alliance, committing to sustainably manage all of its national waters by 2030. With nearly 1 million km² of ocean territory across the Pacific and Caribbean, these waters represent about half of the country’s jurisdiction and are among the most biodiverse in the world. The 100% Alliance calls on all coastal and ocean states to commit to 100% sustainable ocean management of their national waters by 2030 - aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) and the global 30x30 target, which aims to protect at least 30% of the planet. The initiative is led by Australia and Chile, in partnership with the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy and coordinated by World Resources Institute. The announcement was made at a special event in Costa Rica by co-led by CAF -banco de desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe- and WRI aimed at strengthening sustainable ocean governance in Latin America and the Caribbean. https://lnkd.in/eRKtnu32
