ITS WHITELISTED ON GD LETS GOOO
making my level rn

Created this song drawing inspiration from The Midnight and their melodic, nostalgic aesthetic. I did attempt a vocal version, but I wasn't happy with the result. The track still feels a bit empty in the middle (where the vocals would be), but I plan to hunt for better vocals later to fill that space.

??? FRONTPAGE? <3

Starts so smooth, so layered, already so elaborate a tune... and then it begins for real! :D
It's definitely got the synths! It's got those traditional Eighties kicks! It's got the glam and glitz, yet a production quality with a style of panning/phasing I'd relate more to the newer wave of music that emulates the 80s than to THE original 80s. Like the 1975 say. Plus those dampening effects you'd correlate more to modern House, like for example the little bit around 2:10. Basically... it definitely is Synthwave. XD
Soo I suppose the question is, is Synthwave an authentic encapsulation of the Eighties, or a style that's more so reminiscent of the Eighties... is it evolved and even better, or does it instead lack some of the simplicity and imperfection that in a way made music from that era so distinct, and possibly even better? The 'mood' feels a bit different. A bit more distant, or a bit colder than I reckon it would've been a few decades back. Even more new wave songs back then seemed somehow colorful... of course outside 80s Jam context (for which I must judge by - among other things - '80s vibe') that doesn't matter as much as at all.
Either way I really like this tune! And the production is TOP NOTCH. In terms of composition, it does follow a set track; structure all the way, might be refreshing with a bit more difference. Some bigger shift or reposition... the occasional trip ups with the beat is nice, but the melody itself really stays the same the entire time.
Dope work overall; dope throwback to doper times! The mix is NICE. 👍✨

Thank you so much for the detailed comment and the compliments on the production! You brought up a really interesting point about what Synthwave actually is.
To me, that's exactly the core of it: a 2000s genre that brings back 80s nostalgia, but it branches out a lot. I believe many artists like Miami Nights 1984 and Gunship focus heavily on being completely faithful to the original synths, pop rhythms, and those classic mixing/mastering characteristics. My inspiration, however, takes a slightly different route. My biggest influence is The Midnight (and also Timecop1983), bringing Synthwave into a more contemporary space.
My main goal is to capture that feeling and vibe from the classic synths, drum grooves, and specific melodic structures, and blend it into something modern—almost like ambient electronic music in certain cases. It's a modern style, but quite different from what you'd hear from artists like VOJ, Narvent, etc. Even though I love all those styles and still plan to work more with Synthpop or Chillwave, right now I'm really focused on refining this specific sound.
I'm super happy you noticed the mix! My mixing quality has improved a lot recently thanks to a ton of studying. 'Sentinel' is the beginning of that, but it's definitely not the absolute peak of where my mixes are at right now.
As for the track needing more variation: you are totally right! Originally, this track was supposed to have vocals. With vocals, I would have built a much better dynamic structure rather than just 'Intro, Verse, Drop'. But it is what it is! Who knows, maybe one day I'll find exactly what I'm looking for to complete this track.
Anyway, thanks again for the awesome feedback and for listening!
This is great, dude! I love The Midnight and definitely can feel the inspiration. Amazing job!
Thanks man
This is beautiful
This is pretty good. Always love me some retrowave type music
Thanks, that's the vibe I've been trying to get into lately.
