The Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit is one of the first centres in the world to bring together the fields of theoretical neuroscience and machine learning. Our researchers have pioneered research into the mathematical underpinnings of learning, perception and action in biological and artificial systems.
We work closely with colleagues at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour and the wider UCL Neuroscience Domain, the Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning, as well as companies and research institutions around the world. In 2020 we joined the ELLIS Unit at UCL, part of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems.
Over 40% of our PhD and postdoctoral alumni have established successful academic careers, and around 30% continue research in companies such as Google DeepMind, itself founded by two of our alumni, Meta and Anthropic.
The Unit is supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.
