Over the past three decades, open source communities have absorbed one massive technological shift after another: the emergence of the web, the mobile revolution, and the rise of cloud native infrastructure. Through each transition, our ecosystem adapted, strengthened its collaborative norms, and grew more resilient. Yet generative AI introduces a fundamentally distinct dynamic, directly affecting the heart of how project communities function.

Welcome to the October 2026 edition of the Linux Foundation Newsletter

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is ending, and LF Education is discounting training for a limited time. You cansave 40% on eligible cybersecurity training and certifications, and you can save 35% on other training and certifications. A THRIVE-ONE Annual subscription is 30% off.

This month's biggest announcements include a new Platinum Member and two new foundations. AWSbecame a Platinum Member of the Linux Foundation, after more than a decade of taking part in LF projects. The Linux Foundation launched theBUILD Foundation, which gives organizations that depend on Bazel a formal way to fund the project and help set its direction. The Linux Foundation also launchedOpenGrid, which sets shared software architecture and interoperability standards so that power grid planning tools can work together. In addition, FINOS announced thatOSERA is now operating, with support from Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, NatWest, and RBC. The first OSERA release includes secure updates for more than 50 widely used Spring and Java libraries.

LF Research published nine reports this month.35 Years of Linux follows the kernel from a hobby project to the software that now runs on 4 billion Android devices, more than 200 million servers, and all 500 of the world's top supercomputers. The 9th annualState of OSPOs study looks at how open source program offices are handling AI governance.
You'll also find a recap of the Linux Foundation Member European Forum in Prague and details on the LF Education Learning Lounge at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America. The project news covers agentic AI, finance, energy, networking, security, and embedded systems.

>> Read on for even more news, research, and opportunities from across the Linux Foundation.

Thirty-five years ago, a modest post on a newsgroup announced a hobby project that would forever change the landscape of modern technology. Today, we are thrilled to reflect on the impact of the Linux kernel as we share our newest report, 35 Years of Linux: The Open Source Engine of Global Infrastructure and Innovation. From underpinning the cloud to powering outer space missions, the Linux kernel has proven to be an unstoppable engine for economic growth and technical progress. And thanks to the insights from more than a dozen active contributors to the Linux kernel and numerous open source project leaders, and of course, Linus Torvalds himself, this report tells a rich story of how far the kernel has come and where it’s going on the occasion of this milestone anniversary.

When my co-authors Csilla Zsigri, Adrienn Lawson, and I set out to map the state of global data infrastructure on the fifth anniversary of OpenSearch, we sought to capture more than just market statistics. We wanted to document how a prominent open source software project is maturing alongside the rapid, pervasive shift toward enterprise artificial intelligence. Throughout this process, our research team worked closely with Bianca Lewis and the OpenSearch Software Foundation leadership team to ensure our empirical approach addressed the community's most critical strategic questions.
