I love gaming. Even as a kid, when I wasn’t particularly skilled at them, they were a constant presence.
Over the years I started noticing I’d spend most of my time on slop instead of pieces with real substance. Truth was, I felt empty and embarrassed by how little culture I’d absorbed in my life across the many forms of audiovisual media.
I sat on a massive collection, one that remained untouched. Facing that backlog properly was uncomfortable; it proved a gap of passion, could I really be considered a gamer?
Ever since 24/07/23, I’ve been working through as much as I can since then, with the simple hope that one day I can look back and feel like the time was spent on something worthwhile rather than wasted.

Hollow Knight means a lot to me, but I’ve reached my human limit. 42 bosses is just too much, I am not good enough, and I want to keep living.
I am tired, I am desperate, I am confused, I am afraid, I am shocked, I am annoyed, I am disappointed; the one final hurdle left to face and I feel I have no other choice but to leave it be. It truly sucks. I reached the summit of Hollow Knight’s story. I beat Radiance. I saw every ending. I collected every Grub and journal entry. I travelled Hallownest carrying a flower and searching for a mushroom. I conquered the Abyss, the Dreamers, Grimm’s troupe, the goddamn broken soul of Hallownest.
I did what so few ever do.
To stare down despair in a quiet, crumbling world… And give it meaning. I can rest easy knowing that not only did I beat Hollow Knight, but I lived it. I held onto hope in a hopeless kingdom, walked through the silence and left echoes behind, felt the most real sense of humanity other games could only dream of giving the player. I guess sometimes that’s just how the journey ends. Not with fireworks. Not with a standing ovation. All that remains in the end is you, reflecting there—quiet, tired, mourning, and remembering what it means or meant.
It’s hard to tell myself "I’ve done enough", it’s hard to say "I found my ending", but maybe… I can allow myself to stop. That’s not quitting, it’s choosing peace, myself. I’m not climbing down the mountain of Hollow Knight as a failure, but as a survivor of sorts. To let a trophy tell me who I am, to let a percent bar decide my worth, it’s unnecessary. I gave Hollow Knight everything it ever asked for, I gave this piece of art my soul.
Perhaps one day I will return and be the victor I once had dreamed of being here. But… maybe that’s just it for forever, maybe the journey doesn’t get the resolution I had once hoped for, but at least it was one. One that is mine. And it will remain within my heart for the rest of my life. Perhaps the pain of failure will remain, but I’ll do naught but take it, and let it settle. Once I’m ready, a bonfire will be waiting, a mask will stare with eerie moonlight, a blade will whisper one more name, a god will scream against fate, a world will mourn on mechanical wings, a storm will rise in red and rebellion, and an opera will echo through crumbling ruins.
And I’ll walk forward. But not alone.
There’ll always be a tiny knight by my side. 🖤🪲
“In the Black Vault far above… through its sacrifice, Hallownest lasts eternal.”
And so do I.
