A community event to celebrate South Asian History Month

The history of Bengal is the story of multiple interwoven threads. Celebrating the plurality of voices, culinary traditions, textiles, and music that have shaped East and West Bengal is central to this event. The theme, ‘Restitching Heritage: A Journey through Bengali Textile, Music, and Food,’ will weave together these different threads of heritage. We aim to bring people from across the Bengali community and other communities together to celebrate the heritage and culture of Bengal. By focusing on forms of sensory heritage through food, textiles, and music, we aspire to provoke discussion on themes of identity, heritage preservation, and community. The connections between East Bengal and Britain date back to colonial times and there is evidence of Bengalis living in East London in the 18th century.The event will emphasise the cross-cultural connections between communities and their impact on British culture, as the historical legacy of colonialism lingers on South Asian communities, as well as Britain. By focusing on ‘sensory’ forms of heritage through sound, taste, and textile, we add a unique and important dimension to this year’s <a href="https://southasianheritage.org.uk/" title="https://southasianheritage.org.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">South Asian Heritage Month</a> celebrations. The event is organised by the community organisation <a href="https://www.instagram.com/migrantmemory_collective/" title="https://www.instagram.com/migrantmemory_collective/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Migrant Memory Collective</a> and <a href="https://www.londonmet.ac.uk/schools/computing-and-digital-media/" title="https://www.londonmet.ac.uk/schools/computing-and-digital-media/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The School of Computing and Digital Media</a>, London Metropolitan University, in partnership with <a href="https://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/lgnl/leisure_and_culture/Arts_events_and_information/arts_events_and_information.aspx" title="https://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/lgnl/leisure_and_culture/Arts_events_and_information/arts_events_and_information.aspx" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tower Hamlets Council</a> and <a href="https://www.restlessbeings.org/about-us" title="https://www.restlessbeings.org/about-us" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Restless Beings</a>, and is supported by Loughborough University’s research project <a href="https://www.memoriesofpartition.co.uk/" title="https://www.memoriesofpartition.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Migrant Memory and the Postcolonial Imagination</a> and by the heritage organisations <a href="https://www.instagram.com/oitij_jo/?hl=en" title="https://www.instagram.com/oitij_jo/?hl=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Oitij-jo</a>, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/britbanglanetwork/?hl=en" title="https://www.instagram.com/britbanglanetwork/?hl=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">BritBangla Network</a>, and <a href="https://www.everydaymuslim.org/" title="https://www.everydaymuslim.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Everyday Muslim Heritage</a>.Please note that unaccompanied children are not allowed. Anyone bringing children must be responsible for them and ensure they are not left unsupervised.Light refreshments will be provided by Oiti-jo. Please enter via the Goulston Street reception (16 Goulston Street, London E1 7TP).The campus is minutes away from two tube stations, Aldgate (Circle, Metropolitan lines) and Aldgate East (District, and Hammersmith &amp; City). Mainline railway stations Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street are a short walk away. Please note that filming/photography will take place at this event for promotional and archival purposes.
