Local CDP injection
The engine launches the official Codex app with a DevTools port bound to 127.0.0.1 and injects CSS + decorative DOM. Your .app, app.asar, and code signature are never touched.

What is Codex Dream Skin?
Codex Dream Skin is an open-source theming engine that gives the Codex desktop app a full-window visual makeover without ever repackaging the application. Instead of editing app.asar or swapping icons, it drives the official Codex build through a local DevTools connection and layers CSS plus a few decorative DOM nodes over the interface you already use. The result is a continuous, edge-to-edge theme — wallpaper, focus glow, task cards, and light or dark treatment — that reads like a native redesign while every real control stays exactly where Codex put it. This gallery collects ready-to-install Codex Dream Skin themes so you can preview a look before committing to it, and each preset links straight to the guide that installs it. Think of it as a wardrobe for your editor: the same Codex you work in every day, dressed in whatever mood suits the project.
How does one image become a full theme?
The engine starts from a single UI-free image — a photograph, an illustration, a gradient, anything without buttons baked in. On your own machine it analyses that image for dominant colour, focal point, safe areas, and overall brightness, then generates a coherent palette and the safe zones the composer and sidebar can sit inside. From there it paints the Codex window: the background becomes your image, accents pick up its colours, and the light or dark appearance follows the image mood. Because the analysis and rendering happen locally, nothing about your prompts, projects, or screenshots ever leaves the device.
Is Codex Dream Skin safe to run?
Safety is the whole design premise. Codex Dream Skin never touches your .app bundle, app.asar, code signature, or the official install directory. It launches the real Codex binary with a DevTools port bound to 127.0.0.1 — reachable only from your own computer — and styles the live renderer, the same surface any browser extension styles. Nothing is patched on disk, so an official Codex update simply overwrites nothing of yours. If a new build ever changes the layout in a way a theme does not expect, one click restores the stock appearance and relaunches Codex clean. macOS and Windows, both covered
Both desktop platforms are first-class. On macOS you download a signed installer, double-click it, and the menu bar app seeds two live-tested presets you can switch between instantly. On Windows you run two PowerShell scripts — one to install, one to start — and the system tray gives you the same switch, pause, and import controls. Neither path modifies protected system folders like WindowsApps; both use the same local injection approach and the same one-click restore. The step-by-step guides for each platform take about two minutes to follow from download to a fully themed desktop.
Customise, switch, and restore anytime
Once the engine is running you are not locked into the gallery. Import your own wallpaper from the menu bar or tray and Codex Dream Skin builds a matching theme around it on the spot. Save the looks you like, switch between them as your mood or the time of day changes, or pause theming entirely when you want the stock interface back for a clean screenshot. Every change is reversible, and restore is always a single action — the injector stops, Codex relaunches, and no residue is left behind in the official install.
Free, open source, community-run
Every theme here is free, and the engine that powers them is the open-source Codex Dream Skin project (MIT licensed) by Fei-Away. You can read the source, audit exactly how the injection works, file issues, or build your own themes on top of it. This site is an independent community gallery — a place to browse looks, follow install guides, and submit your own creations — and it stays in sync with the upstream engine so the presets you see match what ships.
