Three things to settle before choosing software

All three are settled before you pick a tool.

One passport per battery, not per model

Article 77(2) asks for both: data on the battery model and on the individual battery. You maintain the model data once. Every unit produced gets its own passport with its own identifier.

Three levels in the passport, not everything public

Every field in the passport carries a level: Public, Restricted or Authority. Anyone scanning the QR code sees the public data only. The authority level follows Annex XIII point 3 and stays with notified bodies, market surveillance and the Commission. Pure account data such as your VAT ID stays outside the passport entirely.

71 data points, 32 to 49 mandatory depending on type

That is the count in the European Commission data point guidance of 15 August 2026. Mandatory are 46 entries for electric vehicle batteries, 49 for LMT, 32 for industrial batteries. Nine points are dropped at the start for all three types, among them the carbon footprint label and the four recycled content shares.

What is a battery passport under the EU Battery Regulation?

A battery passport is a digital product passport that becomes mandatory from 18 February 2027 for electric vehicle batteries, industrial batteries with a capacity above 2 kWh and light means of transport (LMT) batteries. It contains information on materials and composition, carbon footprint, supply chain due diligence, circularity, performance, and durability. Some of these data points, including the carbon footprint declaration, the carbon footprint label and material composition, are classified by the European Commission guidance of 15 August 2026 (version 2.0) as not to be filled in as of February 2027. The legal basis is the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542, specifically Article 77. DPP Hero is a creation and management tool that enables economic operators to capture and export their battery passport data in a structured format based on DIN SPEC 99100.

What is DIN SPEC 99100 and why does it matter?

DIN DKE SPEC 99100:2025-02 is a German publicly available specification. It describes the data structure of the battery passport in seven categories. It is not a harmonised standard, so it creates no presumption of conformity. In practice it helps to order the data. DPP Hero builds on it.

When does the digital product passport become mandatory?

For batteries the passport becomes mandatory on 18 February 2027. It covers electric vehicle batteries, LMT batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. The legal basis is EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542. The ESPR extends the product passport to further product groups later.

Who needs a battery passport?

Every economic operator placing electric vehicle, industrial or LMT batteries on the EU market. That includes manufacturers, importers and authorised representatives. The operator is liable for accuracy and completeness. DPP Hero captures the data along DIN SPEC 99100. Portable batteries and SLI starter batteries need no passport, but they too carry the mandatory QR code; for them it leads to the labeling data.

What data does a battery passport contain?

According to DIN SPEC 99100, a battery passport comprises seven data categories: identification (e.g., GTIN, manufacturer details), materials and composition, carbon footprint, supply chain due diligence, circularity and recycling, performance and durability, and labeling and EU declaration of conformity. This data provides transparency across the entire battery lifecycle. DPP Hero guides you as battery passport software through all seven categories in a structured manner.

What happens if a battery passport is missing?

What matters is not the fine but market access. Without a passport the battery may not be placed on the market from 18 February 2027. In Germany section 60 of the Battery Act Implementation Act adds fines of up to 500,000, 100,000 or 10,000 euros. The highest tier covers supply chain due diligence, not the passport duty itself. Enforcement lies with the market surveillance authorities of the Länder, and with customs on import.

Which other products will need a digital product passport?

The battery passport is the first implementation, not a special case. The framework for everything that follows is the Ecodesign Regulation ESPR (EU) 2024/1781; the specific requirements arrive per product group in separate delegated acts. The Commission working plan of 16 April 2025 (COM(2025) 187) names iron and steel for 2026. Aluminium, textiles and tyres follow in 2027, furniture in 2028 and mattresses in 2029; further priorities such as electronics have no date yet. Anyone building a clean data structure for batteries today can reuse it later.

How does the passport get onto the battery?

Through a data carrier on the product. Article 13(6) leaves no choice: from 18 February 2027 all batteries carry a QR code under Annex VI Part C. Article 77(3) makes the passport accessible through exactly that code. The regulation does not prohibit extra carriers such as NFC or RFID, but for batteries they do not take the place of the QR code. The product passport under the ESPR is more technology-neutral, batteries follow the narrower rule.

Is a spreadsheet enough for the battery passport?

For collecting yes, as the passport itself no. The passport needs a unique identifier per individual battery. It needs machine-readable access through the QR code. It needs tiered access rights and lasting availability across the lifetime. Build it yourself and you run a product, not a project. Our comparison page sets both routes side by side.

Do I need one battery passport per model or per individual battery?

Per individual battery. Article 77(1) requires a separate electronic record from 18 February 2027. It covers LMT batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and electric vehicle batteries. Paragraph 2 separates the model data from the data on the individual battery. For you that means: enter model data once, serial number and QR code per unit. Larger volumes go in via CSV import or the API.

How do I evidence that the passport data is correct?

Through three building blocks. First the origin: suppliers enter their data themselves through a release link. Second the evidence: documents can be attached to each product, test reports for example. Third the completeness: before publishing, a check shows the missing mandatory fields. Every step lands in the audit log, with actor and timestamp.
