ActiveRecord::Tablefree provides ActiveRecord models that are not backed by a database table. It preserves useful ActiveRecord behavior such as attributes, validations, relationships, and nested attributes for transient form or service objects.

Compatible with MRI Ruby 2.2.2+, JRuby, and TruffleRuby. CI workflows and Appraisals are generated for MRI Ruby 2.4+. This test floor is configured by ruby.test_minimum in .kettle-jem.yml and may be higher than the gem's runtime compatibility floor when legacy Rubies are not practical for the current toolchain.

Install the gem and add to the application's Gemfile by executing:

bundle add activerecord-tablefree

If bundler is not being used to manage dependencies, install the gem by executing:

gem install activerecord-tablefree

Include ActiveRecord::Tablefree in the model and call has_no_table. Declare the virtual columns with column; by default database operations fail fast so accidental persistence is visible. Use database: :pretend_success only when the application deliberately needs no-op persistence behavior.

Define a model like this:

class ContactMessage < ActiveRecord::Base
  has_no_table
  column :name, :string
  column :email, :string
  column :message, :string
  validates_presence_of :name, :email, :message
end

You can now use the model in a view like this:

<%= form_for :contact_message, @contact_message do |f| %>
  Your name: <%= f.text_field :name %>
  Your email: <%= f.text_field :email %>
  Your message: <%= f.text_field :message %>
<% end %>

And in the controller:

def contact_message
  @contact_message = ContactMessage.new
