What is HPVinfo.ca?

HPVinfo.ca delivers evidence-based information about the human papillomavirus. All material on this site is developed and reviewed by health-care professionals and is based on guidelines from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC). HPVinfo.ca is administered by the SOGC, Canada’s leading authority on sexual and reproductive health.

The SOGC recognizes the importance to be fully inclusive and when context is appropriate, gender-neutral language will be used. In other circumstances, we continue to use gendered language because of our mission to advance women’s health. The SOGC recognizes and respects the rights of all people for whom the information in this webpage may apply, including, but not limited to transgender, non-binary, and intersex people.

What is HPV?

HPV is highly contagious and can spread by skin-to-skin contact in the genital area (penetration is not required) or during genital, anal or oral sex.

Signs and symptoms

Many people who get HPV will not even realize it, since most types of HPV cause no visible signs or symptoms.

Prevention

The HPV virus is very contagious. It is important to take every measure possible to protect yourself and your partner. Spread the word, not the disease.

Treatment

HPV cannot be treated. Doctors can remove visible genital lesions and warts caused by HPV, but there is no cure for the virus.

Dr. Cathy Popadiuk

Cathy Popadiuk is a gynaecologic oncologist in St. John’s Newfoundland, treating cervical cancer and other gynaecologic malignancies. She is also the accomplished Medical Director for the Newfoundland Cervical Screening Initiative Program.

Dr. Marc Steben

Marc Steben is a family physician working in a Family Medicine Group in Montreal. He is chair of the Canadian HPV prevention network and volunteers with HPV Awareness, a Canadian community group to help prevent HPV and eliminate cervical cancer.
