The gap between "I have an app" and "I have an app with a backend" is now one command wide. Every Expo developer knows this moment: the screens work, navigation is smooth, the demo lands. Then someone asks where the data lives. So you go pick a database, create an account, spin up a project, copy a deployment URL out of one dashboard, paste it into your environment config, set the same variable again for each build profile, and hope nothing got missed. Expo worked with the team at Convex to close that gap. In a new guest post, Wayne Sutton walks through the result: ◆ 𝚎𝚊𝚜 𝚒𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚐𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚜:𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚟𝚎𝚡:𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚗𝚎𝚌𝚝 provisions a Convex project and deployment for your Expo app, writes 𝙲𝙾𝙽𝚅𝙴𝚇_𝙳𝙴𝙿𝙻𝙾𝚈_𝙺𝙴𝚈 and 𝙴𝚇𝙿𝙾_𝙿𝚄𝙱𝙻𝙸𝙲_𝙲𝙾𝙽𝚅𝙴𝚇_𝚄𝚁𝙻 to your .𝚎𝚗𝚟.𝚕𝚘𝚌𝚊𝚕, then sets 𝙴𝚇𝙿𝙾_𝙿𝚄𝙱𝙻𝙸𝙲_𝙲𝙾𝙽𝚅𝙴𝚇_𝚄𝚁𝙻 as an EAS environment variable across production, preview, and development. ◆ You get a realtime database, TypeScript server functions, file storage, search, and scheduling behind a typed client. 𝚞𝚜𝚎𝚀𝚞𝚎𝚛𝚢 results update on their own when the data changes, so there is no refetching or cache invalidation code to write. ◆ Types are generated from your backend, so a renamed field on the server shows up as a TypeScript error in the component that reads it. ◆ Unlinking is safe. It removes the EAS integration metadata and leaves your Convex data and deployments in place. Reach for it when live data is the point: chat, presence, live scores, collaborative lists, anything where the screen should update the moment the data does. If your app is a thin client over an existing internal API, or the data is fully static, you probably do not need it. Because the whole setup is one command with predictable flags, it also hands off cleanly to a coding agent. No dashboard clicks to delegate, no secrets to read back.
