Salon Rentals

At the back of Pale Fire there is a salon where people gather. The room was designed and built by architect Scott Cohen and artist Graham Landin, with significant contributions by Duncan McQuade, Nicole Ondre, Charlotte Campbell, Justin Wright and Paul Kuranko. The salon is imagined as a sanctuary, drawing aesthetic influence from West Coast saunas, Southern saloons, Irish Shebeens and Japanese Kissas.
This space also draws inspiration from the history and vernacular of regional artist bars, such as Nicole Ondre and Vanessa Disler’s Cedar Tavern at Exercise (2011–13), Instant Coffee’s Light Bar (2008–10), Robert Pederson’s Solder and Sons (2008–14), Kaspar Feyrer’s Poodle Dog Ornamental Bar (2009), Alex Mackenzie’s Blinding Light (1998–2003) and Edison
Electric (1995–97), and Michael Turner’s Malcolm Lowry Room (1993–96).
The salon is available to rent for private events of up to 50 people. The basic rental fee for an evening is $500 + tax. If you are interested in renting the salon, please contact amy@palefireprojects.com

About

Pale Fire is an art gallery in Vancouver, BC, Canada that was established by Amy Kazymerchyk in 2022. The gallery currently presents eight to ten week exhibitions, while establishing a foundation upon which it can nurture long term relationships with artists, audiences, collaborators and patrons. With time, the gallery’s program will expand to include site specific, temporal or ephemeral satellite projects.

In her curatorial practice, Amy
Kazymerchyk has paid attention to moving image and
time-based practices in dialogue with visual
art, cinema, performance, and poetics. Previous to opening Pale Fire, she was the Curator of SFU Galleries’
Audain Gallery, the Events and Exhibitions Coordinator at VIVO Media Arts
Centre, and Programmer of DIM Cinema at The Cinematheque.&#38;nbsp;She inaugurated Pale Fire in part, to synthesize the aspects of artist run, academic and commercial art culture that are best suited to support artists at this time.

The gallery’s name is borrowed from a monologue in of Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens: “… the moon's an
arrant thief, / And her pale fire she snatches from the sun:” (Act
IV Scene 3 488-95 ). Timon proceeds to describe how the sun, moon, earth and sea all derive their most vivid traits from one another, however, symbiosis fouled by greed turns to theft. Fire may be the defining element of the twenty-first century. Its
generative properties continue to foster knowledge, technology and
culture, and metaphysically it imbues us with insight, passion and faith. When fire is is exploited–as we’re experiencing–it quickly renders inner and outer landscapes parched, feverish and scorched.Photos: Rachel Topham Photography</description>

World at Hand gathers the work of five artists who are curious about the purpose, meaning and value of the natural and manufactured phenomena around them. Aileen Bahmanipour, Jesse Gray, Danan Lake, Christian Newby and Kuh Del Rosario&#38;nbsp;draw attention to the potential of the tools, objects and elements at their fingertips, the stories they have become imbued with, and how playing with their composition, context or utility can expand these narratives.Read More

Jesse Gray is a seasoned scavenger who collects plastic garbage from beaches and shorelines around Nanaimo and other parts of Vancouver Island. She is drawn to bits of resilient debris that have become separated from the biodegradable elements of their utilitarian forms. Stripped of commodity value, the unique shapes, textures and pliability of each fragment become the subject of her assemblages, which she casts in bronze. Mesomonuments: Scrap Figures After Elza Mayhew (2020) cites Victoria-based modernist sculptor Elza Mayhew (1916–2004), who created monumental bronze sculptures and innovated a technique of hot-carving polystyrene models. Meso, meaning middle in Greek, refers to a debris size classification (called mesoplastics in marine ecology) as well as the indeterminacy of Gray’s source materials and the size of her sculptures, neither monument nor anti-monument.

Scavenging also influences Kuh Del Rosario’s practice. She&#38;nbsp;collects&#38;nbsp;fragments of natural and cultural materials and works them into the skins of her assemblages, which become evidence of the artist’s experience in certain places and times. idigit, there’s no place, and hip to waste ratio (all 2025) were made during a residency at the Badlands Art Department, along the Rosebud River in Treaty 7 Territory, Alberta. The program draws artists’ attention to the surrounding environment, which is informed by Blackfoot culture, coal and clay mining, natural gas, and paleontological and geological phenomena. Del Rosario approaches materials such as used denim, metal filings, clam shells, garter snake skin and wild clay with an animist perspective that is influenced in part by Filipino mythology and values. She is interested in the agency of the elements she works with and pays close attention to how they crack, shift, peel and stain over time. Observing how an artwork is affected by human and weather pressures is a means of understanding how an environment may be impacted by similar forces.

Danan Lake is likewise sensitive to the pressure of natural and human events. In 2024, he was one of the community responders to the Argenta Creek wildfire that ravaged the rural community of Argenta,&#38;nbsp;British Columbia.&#38;nbsp;One of the few belongings sent out of the fire evacuation zone was a banjo that a farmer had handmade for his daughter thirty years prior.&#38;nbsp;Part of Lake’s contribution included fixing the damaged instrument. His subsequent work Tubaphone (2025) is a collection of bronze forms that he cast from potatoes that the farmer gave him as a gesture of thanks. The gesture was significant because Argenta residents, including Lake’s family, have been gifted, traded or paid in potatoes by this man for generations. In Lake’s work, tubers—usually eaten, planted or composted—are preserved in bronze, making visible the plant’s social value.

Garden plants reflect social relations in Aileen Bahmanipour’s work, too. Cartography of a Typography (2025) is an iterative project inspired by the Women, Life, Freedom movement, which has sought greater political and religious freedoms for women in Iran following the murder of Mahsa Amini in 2022. Bahmanipour observed the events at a distance from Northern British Columbia. Isolated from her community, she began playing with black-eyed bean sprouts, organizing them into the shape of the Farsi word for “Us” (ما). As the fully grown plants wilted, she traced their shadows onto canvas with iron ink and acrylic, painting multiple superimposed traces of the word. The daily ritual offered time to reflect upon what constitutes an Us across geographic and cultural distance. Bahmanipour chose the black-eyed bean because it conjures the image of a bruised face, reflecting the dangers activists in the movement confront daily. The paintings are messy, dripping and unfinished—much like the process of political and cultural change.

Christian Newby’s practice took a significant turn when he discovered an industrial handheld carpet-tufting gun, originally manufactured in Hong Kong in the 1950s, and became curious about unorthodox ways of using it. The industrial approach to tufting is disciplined and repetitive: the pile is supposed to be consistent and dense, and not show the woven substrate. Newby simultaneously uses a range of fibres,&#38;nbsp;including&#38;nbsp;acrylic yarn, baling twine, rattan and Scottish lambswool, and cuts the substrate into imbalanced shapes that can’t be evenly covered. He also works improvisationally and abstractly, composing the tapestry as he tufts. The ragged handmade-ness of Swatch (2024) contrasts the smooth machinic quality of industrial production. *

Aileen Bahmanipour is an Iranian Canadian visual artist whose practice explores contemporary forms of iconoclasm and the politics of perception. After living and working for over a decade in Vancouver and the Bella Coola Valley, British Columbia, she relocated to Grande Prairie, Alberta, where she teaches visual arts at Northwestern Polytechnic. Her work has been exhibited at GlogauAIR in Berlin, Germany; Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Alberta; grunt gallery, Burrard Arts Foundation and Artspeak in Vancouver, British Columbia; and Two Rivers Gallery in Prince George, British Columbia. Bahmanipour holds a BFA in Painting from Tehran University of Art, Iran, and an MFA in Visual Arts from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. She was longlisted for 2026 Sobey Art Award. Cartography of a Typography (2025) was previously presented at Doris Space for Art in Beaverlodge, Alberta, and was generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts. An earlier iteration was included in the group exhibition It’s Still Living at Artspeak in Vancouver in 2023.

Jesse Gray is a multidisciplinary artist working and living on Snuneymuxw Territory / Nanaimo’s South End. She works in drawing, painting, bronze casting, printmaking, digital illustration and environmental social practice. Mesomonuments (2020) was first exhibited at Artspeak in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2020. A selection of the sculptures were acquired by the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery in Vancouver and exhibited in Another Green World: Works from the Collection in 2024. A selection were also presented in Be True to Your School, Simon Fraser University’s School for Contemporary Arts alumni exhibition at its Audain Gallery in Vancouver in 2025.

Danan Lake is an artist, curator and craftsperson from Argenta, British Columbia, a community of about 150 people. His practice uses folklore and folk culture as a lens to consider relationships to place, community and nonhuman beings. His upbringing in a remote community where both self-sufficiency and collective care are part of everyday life shaped his approach to material and process. His practice spans sculpture, installation and image-based media, and he works with wood, stone, metal, digital print, electronics and found objects. Lake studied for his BFA at NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Weißensee Kunsthochschule in Berlin, Germany, followed by an MFA at the University of Guelph, Ontario. He currently lives in Montréal, Québec. Mushrooming (2025) was previously shown at Doris Space for Art in Beaverlodge, Alberta, and Tubaphone (2025) was previously show at Garden Variety Volume V in Toronto, Ontario, both in 2025.

Christian Newby is a Vancouver-based artist and researcher whose practice spans drawing, textiles and publishing. He holds a PhD in Fine Art from Kingston University London, England (2022), and is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. His work has been shown internationally across the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia and South America. Newby has participated in residencies at Matadero in Madrid, Spain; Triangle in Marseille, France; Gasworks/URRA in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Academy of Visual Arts in Hong Kong. Swatch (2024) was previously exhibited at CSA Space in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2025

Kuh Del Rosario is a visual artist based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, Québec. Born in Manila, Philippines, she immigrated to Calgary, Alberta, where she earned a BFA in Painting from the Alberta College of Art and Design before completing an MFA in Sculpture and Ceramics at Concordia University in Montréal, Québec. She is currently an artist-in-residence at Montréal’s Fonderie Darling (2023–26), supported by the Collections Desjardins, and is looking forward to a residency with Arteventura in Andalusia, Spain, and a solo exhibition, Une Pierre Tremblante se Lève, at Centre d’exposition Yvonne L. Bombardier in Valcourt, Québec, later this year. In 2026, her work was featured in the group exhibitions Ribbon, bell, emerald, stamp at Livart in Montréal; Keeper at Indigo+Madder in London, England, and March in New York, New York; Faire Eau at Musée d’art contemporain Baie-Saint-Paul, Québec; Precious objects performing non-precious tasks at the plumb in Toronto, Ontario; and Holding Still at McBride Contemporain in Montréal. idigit, there’s no place, and hip to waste ratio (all 2025) were previously shown in the group exhibition Entwined, at Calgary Contemporary, and in her solo show na dadaanan at the Badlands Art Department, Drumheller, Alberta, both in 2025. The palette carries things and Under the Balete tree were shown in An unhusked grain of rice fills the whole house at Galerie B-132 in Montréal, Québec.

Reave Dennison is a photographer and gelatin silver printmaker who documents maritime and forestry labour in the Pacific Northwest. Tree Work presents a selection of new black and white analogue photographs that Dennison took while working as a beachcomber, sawyer and arborist over the past five years. The images portray the environments, people, material culture and technical craft of these disciplines. Dennison focuses his camera on the conditions he works in, so that he can shoot candidly and intimately. Read More

	Forestry is a primary industry in British Columbia, comprising hundreds of responsibilities and skill sets. Yet there is relatively little familiarity with the roles that these people play in the regional economy and its culture; their relationships to the environments they live and work in; or the impact that shifting political, ecological and technological conditions have on their lives and the social fabric of the province. Dennison’s images offer a glimpse into these contexts and experiences. Dennison is attentive to analogue photographic processes. He shoots in small, medium and large film formats; then develops and prints his negatives in a darkroom that he built. He also hand milled and constructed the wood frames that the works are presented in.&#38;nbsp;

Reave Dennison is a photographer living and working on Mayne Island, British Columbia. Actively working within the trades, his primary focus is documenting labour in the Pacific Northwest. He recently presented his project Under 60 Tons at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, Victoria (2025), the Vancouver Maritime Museum (2023) and the Gibson’s Public Art Gallery (2022). His first photography book about the project,&#38;nbsp; co-published by Pale Fire and Information Office was released in 2026.

Pale Fire will also release Dennison’s first photography book, Under 60 tons this spring. Co-designed and co-produced with Information Office, the book features over 90 photographs that he took while working as a crew member aboard small, versatile tug boats, which are classified as ‘under 60 gross tons’. These boats are being retired by companies in favour of larger, more stream lined vessels to comply with the tightening of Transport Canada regulations. Dennison’s photographs capture crew members who navigate marine machinery, infrastructure and the elements, including hands on chart work, compass work and manual labour. Many of these skills and duties are being rendered obsolete by technology. Dennison observes and reflects on this industrial and cultural transition.

Judith Williams: WATER / COLOUR

Explore the artworks in this exhibition

Judith Williams’ WATER / COLOUR features a sequence of paintings made solely with water collected from twenty-nine creeks and rivers up Bute Inlet, on the Pacific Coast of B.C., in ʔop qaymɩxʷ (Homalco) territory.&#38;nbsp;Williams began the project in 2010 in response to corporate applications for seventeen run-of-river hydro projects in the Bute, as well as seven proposals to collect, bottle and export its fresh water.&#38;nbsp;She collaborated with fishing guides, Homalco band members, loggers, mariners and mountaineers to collect the water.

The paintings express the fluidity of the element and the residue of aquatic geology, biology and botany that flows through it. Each image suspends phenomena that are usually in perpetual motion. The installation maps the geographical proximity of the waterways in the inlet, from south to north. Water is not segregated in this territory, and so Williams’ samples, marks and sequencing also conjure the symbiosis of the ecosystem.

WATER / COLOUR draws on Williams’ practice of making watercolour paintings of natural and cultural encounters on Redonda and Cortes islands, where she has lived since the 1970s. She is a keen observer of the way that human events shape places, habits and objects, and vice versa, which informs her approach to making paintings as well as books, assemblages and installations of experiential research and collected materials. In the 1990s, her long-term investment in the mid-coast islands sharpened her focus on the historical and living imprint of Indigenous communities on the territory, as well as the influence and impact of early European explorers and settlers.

Williams exploration of Bute Inlet led to her exhibition High Slack at UBC’s Museum of Anthropology (1993/4) and the publication of High Slack: Waddington’s Gold Road and the Bute Inlet Massacre of 1864 (1996). Through this project, she developed a methodology of “poetic archeology”, which informed her artistic practice and the research and writing of four more books about the region: Two Wolves at the Dawn of Time: Kingcome Inlet Pictographs, 1893–1998 (2001), Dynamite Stories (2003), Clam Gardens: Aboriginal Mariculture on Canada’s West Coast (2006), and Cougar Companions: Bute Inlet Country and the Legendary Schnarrs (2019).Cougar Companions emerged following Williams’ introduction to Bute Wax, a beguiling substance that intermittently and inexplicably emerges in Bute’s waters. She was gifted a jar of the wax that was collected in the 1920s by the Schnarr family, who were early settlers in the inlet, and it is featured in WATER / COLOUR. As Williams collected water, she encountered oral and material data about cultural, geological and marine phenomena like the wax. This led her to explore stories from the Homalco Nation, historical settlers and current residents; as well as to research power projects from the 1920s to the present. In previous iterations of the exhibition, the investigative material she collected was presented in booklets and a display cabinet.

In 2021, Williams resumed gathering water after a significant landslide lurched down Elliot Creek into the Southgate River. The Homathko Icefield at the north end of the inlet––the third largest outside of the Arctic––was melting, and its recession exposed a large rock that separated from the mountain and fell into Elliot Lake, displacing a massive amount of fresh water, which in turn propelled the slide. The event was evidence that the inlet is threatened not only by industrial exploitation, but also by the rapid warming of the atmosphere.

Judith Margaret Williams is a visual artist and author living on Cortes Island, B.C., Canada. She was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia from 1979 to 2001. Her visual art has been exhibited at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, CA; Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis MN; Cranbrook Art Museum, Detroit MI; Vancouver Art Gallery, B.C.; UBC’s Museum of Anthropology, B.C.; The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, B.C.; Surrey Art Gallery, B.C.; and the Richmond Art Gallery, B.C., amongst others. She is the author of five books published with Harbour Publishing and New Star Books, that are listed above. She has also made numerous artist books and pamphlets to accompany her projects and exhibitions, including Naming and Claiming: the Creation of Bute Inlet (2011), Salmon Stock (2003) and High Slack (1994).Her work is featured in the public collections of the B.C. Cultural Services Branch, The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Canada Council Art Bank, Carleton University, UBC Graduate Student Collection, The Vancouver Art Gallery and the Vancouver City Public Collection.

WATER / COLOUR was made on the territories of the toq qaymɩxʷ (Klahoose), ɬəʔamɛn qaymɩxʷ (Tla’amin) and ʔop qaymɩxʷ&#38;nbsp;(Homalco) nations. The project is indebted to the collaboration of Homalco Chief Darren Blaney; mountaineers John Scott, Laurie and Rob Wood; Gizelle Uzell, Randy Kelloran, Chuck and Sheron Burchill of Homathko Camp; Iris and Volker Steigemann; boating companions Cathy and John Campbell, Isabelle Desmarais, Bobo Fraser, Mark Gomes, Susan Schell and Bryan Thompson. Pale Fire would like to thank Liz Magor, Anne Low and Josh Duncan for generously supporting this iteration of the exhibition. The project was previously exhibited at the Tidal Art Centre (2022), Lund, B.C., the Old School House Gallery (2022), Cortes Island, B.C., and the Old School House Arts Centre (2024), Qualicum Beach, B.C.

The nights are getting longer. Quickly. Following the autumn equinox, the moon feels more productive than the sun, offering matter an opportunity to rest, decompose and regenerate in the cool, damp darkness. The song of the season is slow and quiet, with a whisper of melancholy and eros. Opening in the season’s waning light, Nocturne presents work that harnesses this energy. In the artists’ practices, decay is a fertile process.
In his drawing and sculpture works, Sean Jena Taal engages with processes of slow accumulation. He made Drapery (2025) by building up layers of graphite to create dense metallic shadows, and Bridal Veil (2023) by slowly pouring then redacting a wax mould to cast in bronze. These gestures mimic the growth of calcite formations in caves, which require the convergence of specific geological and weather conditions over millennia. Caves have also been significant sites for the evolution of human perception, consciousness and culture. Both phenomena inform Taal’s inquiry into “psycho-karstology.”

Ronan Stewart also approaches steel with patience, inviting time itself to be a material in his process. His sculptures emerge one bead of molten MIG wire at a time. They accumulate like wax into forms that resemble the slow rise of stalagmites. These fragments are pruned and sutured together to form figures that echo the fragile posture of withering plants. In Stewart’s Husk (2025) series, the stability of steel confronts the ephemerality of flora, presenting an arrested encounter between what endures and what fades.
Mahsa Farzi is motivated by the liberatory potential of de-creation. Her installation Untamed (2025) draws together images and text from Persian miniature painting, folklore and literature. Farzi cuts limbs, orifices, sexual organs and flowers out of acrylic panels, to which she applies diluted metal paint which shocks the plastic, creating an etched and stained effect. She then works with a high-temperature propane torch that distorts and deforms the figures. Farzi’s process materializes the disorientation of cultural and ideological alienation, which slowly renders the world fragmented and unfamiliar. In her work, she explores the potential for release and renewal that this psychic and social erosion offers.
Evan McGraw’s calligraphic work is a ritual of precision and calculated experimentation. He plays with the visual and syllabic form of single words and short expressions in ways that unravel their legibility. Through repetition, letters drift, float, coil and dissolve. Ruin, Seraphic and Get Bent (2025) convey unique energetic states, expressing elegance, destruction and refusal. Repeating each word vocally is a form of incantation that both summons their energy and diffuses it.
Marcel Lessard also works with repetition. His graphite mosaics 1.31 (1 &#38;amp; 2) (2024) present iterations of two environments: the shoreline and an abstraction of space. He develops the compositions sequentially from the outside in, and each unit is a unique drawing that builds off of elements in the previous one. Lessard is interested in these two geographies as physical and psychological boundaries. He is curious about how the perception of each space is altered through reduction and reoccurrence.
In Shayne Weston Abbott-Arcan’s portfolio of sketches and drawings, the phenomenon of transfiguration frequently rears its head. Bodies of real and imagined animals are hyphenated or morph into one another. Some beings have anthropomorphic features, while others express qualities of a more-than-human spirit. For Abbott-Arcan, drawing was a means of wandering through his emotional and sensual experience of the world. He wasn’t afraid to explore the darkest corners of his encounters. In them, he often found a stray thread that led back to the light.

BIOS

Mahsa Farzi (b. 1992, Tehran, Iran) works across painting, drawing and sculpture. She examines how censorship, migration and patriarchy fracture continuity, giving rise to a language of disruption in which humour is inseparable from survival. Within this language, grief and resilience are coexisting conditions that she explores through material processes. Farzi’s work has been shown at THIS Gallery in Vancouver, BC (2025); Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery in Vancouver, BC (2025); and A+ in Beirut, Lebanon (2018). She has been recognized with the Joan Wright Hassell Prize in Visual Arts (2024) and holds an MFA from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver (2025).

Marcel Lessard (b. 1992, Vancouver, Canada) is a visual artist who primarily uses graphite as a drawing tool. He is interested in images as pictograms and how repetition and structural arrangement affects perception and interpretation. Lessard achieved a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver, BC (2024).

Evan McGraw (b. 1990, Sechelt, Canada) is a visual artist who has had exhibitions at High Art in Paris, France (2025); Turley Gallery in Hudson, NY (2024); BIKINI in Basel, Switzerland (2018); Dem Passwords in Los Angeles, CA (2016); and Paul Kasmin in New York City, NY (2015). He completed a BFA at Cooper Union, New York City, NY (2015).

Ronan Stewart (b. 1989, Burlington, Canada) is an Irish Canadian artist living and working in Toronto. His multidisciplinary practice explores themes of labour, material memory and domestic infrastructure through sculptural and visual installations. Recent exhibitions include Cavity of a Husk at Hunt Gallery (2025), Worker’s Pantry at Crutch CAC (2019) and Mother’s Foundry at Birch Contemporary (2018), all in Toronto, ON. He obtained a BFA from Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario (2014).

Sean Jena Taal (b. 1991, Calgary, Canada) explores the geological and phenomenological conditions of caves. He is interested in what life forms grow and survive in these hostile spaces, and what kinds of sentience may be looking back at us from their depths. He has attended the Banff Artist in Residence program at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, AB (2023); the Gil Artist Residency in Akureyri, Iceland (2022); and the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design’s New York Studio Residency Program (2012). Solo exhibitions include, Shadow of the Hollow at Norberg Hall, Calgary, AB (2024); Witch’s Fingers at SAAG, Lethbridge, AB (2023); and Milk Stone at the Art Gallery of NWT, Yellowknife, NWT (2022). He is represented by Norberg Hall, Calgary, AB.

Shayne Weston Abbott-Arcan (b. 2000, Vancouver, Canada; d. 2025, Galiano Island, Canada) was a visual artist whose work moved fluidly between the comical and the surreal, the angelic and the macabre. He created fantastical worlds and dreamlike spaces filled with hybrid beings. He had a gift for making visible the contradictions and internal dramas of being human. As a displaced Indigenous person growing up far from his ancestral Plains Cree territory and culture, Abbott-Arcan also grappled with the deep impacts of colonization. His art became a space where those tensions could live and shift, and where imagination became a form of resistance and healing. Abbott-Arcan passed away suddenly and unexpectantly in February 2025. Later that spring, he was awarded his BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver, BC.

Graham Landin: Tight Span

	September 13–November 30, 2024

I returned from the trip a little dizzy and disoriented, replaying the experience in my mind and examining it from all angles. Ideas came to me in flashes: horse packs piled high, old-fashioned pack saddles and oilskin tarps bound tightly with double diamond hitches. I pulled a small sketch from my luggage that I had whittled by the fireside. It was far from perfect, yet serviceable. In it I could see the horse. I was surprised by the emotions I felt when bidding farewell to my friend who had carried me through smoky valleys, over alpine passes and across the braided river.

Recalling our early morning cat-and-mouse routine, in which I would calmly follow him with an outstretched hand, the other behind my back holding the halter that I’m certain he knew was there. Just when I thought we had reached an agreement, he would bolt on me. After a few rounds of chase, he would give in and bow his head to take the bit. This ritual took place each morning, yet he would always agree to carry me further down the trail.

While riding, he liked to test my grip on the reins by sneaking bites of grass. I focused on maintaining gentle contact, enough to remind him I was there—although whether I was or not, I knew he would follow the pack. I never felt bad about robbing him of his roadside snacks, because in the off-hours he would be turned out to graze freely.

On a rest day, the horses lingered on a sandbar, their bodies relaxed and quiet, huddled together for protection. In the silhouette of the herd, I could make out close friends grooming and nuzzling each other. Free from the fetters of saddles and bridles, their demeanor suggested lazy bathers standing knee high in cool waters to best the Sunday heat. I reflected on learning to ride in stables that only turned out horses for short, sporadic periods, and how their resentment was palpable in the holes they had kicked through their stalls’ walls.

What began as an attempt to hold on to my memories, morphed into a story about two friends who peeled away from the pack after being set free to roam for the evening. In a tight span, the partners commiserate on work and comfort each other against all else. Much like ourselves, who, after the whistle blows, spend our evenings striving to reclaim our natural state only to be pulled back into the grind come sun up.– Graham Landin, August 2024

Graham Landin (b. 1982) is a visual artist and carpenter who lives and works in Richmond, BC. Drawing influence from classical antiquity, off-grid culture, folk art and a variety of modernisms, Landin makes pavilions, sculptures, furniture objects and wall reliefs.
