Illustrations by Peter Nagengast.<br /> <br /> The publications of Verne’s work, by Verlag Neues Leben—one of the first and largest youth publishers in the DDR—did not use the popular 19th-Century engravings from earlier French editions, but had them newly illustrated by “local” artists. Here however Nagengast references the engraving look while still illustrating in a sci-fi, surrealist style, almost Dada.<br /> <br /> Acquired August 2022 by the Night Library from a free book box in Mitte, Berlin. (Thanks to You, You Soviet Soldiers, Thanks to Your Country!) 1974<br /> <br /> Published by the Zentralvorstand der Gesellschaft für Deutsche-Sowjetische Freundschaft (Central Board of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship) <br /> <br /> Released on the occasion of the "30th Anniversary of Liberation from Hitler-Fascism," with a statement from the Central Committee of the SED (Socialist Unity Party of Germany - the ruling dictatorship in the GDR), among others (p.1): "Eternal friendship with the Soviet Union, consolidating the brotherly covenant with the land of Lenin - that is the heartbeat of our lives." The book is a series of A4 Posters with a yellow logo throughout depicting the triumphant soldier clutching a child -- image from the spectacular Soviet Memorial statue, which still stands today in Berlin's Treptower Park.<br /> <br /> The series tells a history of the "liberation" of Nazi Germany, as well as a version of history in which West Germany goes astray, arming itself while the GDR is a pinnacle of peace. It goes on to extol the virtues of the East German society, along with their friends and brothers, the Soviets (their generosity spans from "that first piece of bread to the first nuclear power plant")<br /> <br /> The third page features a color photo of the Soviet Memorial, and the lyrics of the song "Dank euch, ihr Sowjetsoldaten" by Johannes R. Becher (with music by star composer of the GDR, Hans Eisler -- you can hear it here and read translation after the pics, by me and Google) <img college in Bogensee) <br /> <br /> <br /> The Freie Deutsche Jugend -- Free German Youth -- began in Germany in 1936 as an antifascist organization. Pushed out by the Nazis soon after, they met in exile first in Paris, Prague and eventually in London. <br /> <br /> In post-war Germany, they were welcomed in the Soviet occupation zone, and then officially absorbed by the Socialist Unity Party (SED - the only party) in the German Democratic Republic. <br /> <br /> The FDJ was the only recognized youth group in country. In some ways resembling controversial German youth groups before it - as well as Komsomol in the Soviet Union -- membership was voluntary, but those who chose not to join would later find themselves ostracized, with difficulty finding a job or integrating into society as adults. <br /> <br /> While the FDJ originally called for humanism and peace all over the world, in the GDR they were given the responsibility to educate youth in Marxism-Leninism, parallel to the school system. Max Connolly and published in Window Rock, Arizona, by the Navajo Tribe.<br /> <br /> The cover carries a screen-printed version of a Navajo sand painting. Meant to be ceremonially scattered soon after its likeness is introduced to the world, the sand painting is by definition fleeting. This is perhaps an odd choice to put on the considerably less ephemeral cover of a book.<br /> <br /> Indeed, the very idea of a permanent rendering of Navajo thought on the printed page is fraught.
