A Heartfelt Journey Through a Dog's Eyes
Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2025"Mama, I Will Send You a Purple Flower" offers readers a rare and precious gift: the chance to experience life, love, and loss through a dog's perspective. Manizeh Mirza-Gruber's touching story of Cuddles the rescue dog and her human "Mama" beautifully captures the depth of the human-animal bond in ways that resonate deeply with anyone who has ever loved a pet companion.
What makes this book so compelling is its unique narrative choice. By telling the story through Cuddles' voice, we're invited to imagine what our own pets might be thinking and feeling. The canine perspective feels authentic and heartwarming as we witness how dogs communicate through "nudges, woofs, and sidelong glances" - those expressive moments that pet owners know so well, whether real or lovingly imagined.
The story handles the difficult subject of pet loss with compassion and grace. Rather than dwelling solely on grief, it shows how the seeds of love planted during a pet's life continue to bloom even after they're gone, symbolized beautifully by the purple flowers of the title. This metaphor provides a gentle framework for understanding how our connections with beloved pets leave indelible marks on our hearts.
As someone who has recently experienced the loss of a dog companion, I found this book to be a comforting mirror of my own experience. It validates the depth of the human-animal bond while offering a hopeful perspective on continuing to honor that connection even through grief.
This lovingly crafted book would appeal to dog lovers of all ages. For children, it provides a gentle introduction to the concepts of love and loss, while adult readers will appreciate its emotional authenticity and the reminder that our animal companions understand far more about connection and family than we sometimes forget in our harried lives.

A Story of Resilience
Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2024I love how this story is written from the viewpoint of the dog, Cuddles. "Mama, I Will Send You a Purple Flower" is a touching story of the relationship between a dog and it's big-hearted human Mama. This book also touches on the loss of a pet in a compassionate way. Through the illustrations (created also by the author), the reader will be drawn in to why this title was chosen. I know I was!

Amazing and tender true story
Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2024This book is written from a unique perspective, that of the dog central character. The story is heartwarming and tender on several levels. Although it includes sad elements, it ends on a happy note and teaches us about the special connection between pets and humans. My granddaughter's favorite part was when the dog ate too much chocolate and went to the doctor. The supplemental information on nourishing mindfulness can be used in many situations by both adults and children.

Useful companion animal end-of-life doula tool
Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2026I purchased two copies of this book.
One to gift to a friend whose grandson is about to have to say goodbye to the only cat he has ever known. His aunt read it to him in about 7 mns, so it is a very quick and simple read. The boy is 6 years old, and had a big smile at the end, when the second purple flower came into the story.
My own copy, I purchased as part of my certified companion animal end-of- life doula kit, to facilitate conversation between parents and children (or doula and children) about death, pet loss, rituals, honoring one’s pet, and one after care option.
While there is more detailed material available out there to engage in such discussions with children, this simple, and very short illustrated story can definitely serve as a first and gentle preparatory step in creating an important dialogue between caregiver and children.
I also appreciate that some of the proceeds from the sale of the book go towards rescues. It is a beautiful opportunity to also explain to a child that their pet’s end of life doesn’t mean the end of the good and joy their pet’s can continue to contribute to the world.
The mindfulness lessons taught by Cuddles at the end of the book make it more than a short story. I believe the author was very wise to include them as sort of an epilogue, instead of attempting to jam lessons in the story itself, leaving it to be as simple, as personal, and as pure as a guardian’s love for their companion.
