Our Commitments

Climate change

Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 33% by 2030;
Achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050;
Reduce net Scope 3 emissions by 15% by 2035

Dams

Decharacterize* all upstream tailings dams in Brazil by 2035;
Have no upstream tailings dams in a critical safety condition (Emergency Level 3) by 2025;
Implement GISTM at 100% of the TSFs** operated by Vale by 2025.

Diversity, equity and inclusion

Double the representation of women in the workforce from 13% to 26% by 2025;
Increase the representation of women in senior leadership to 26% by 2025;
Achieve 40% Black representation in leadership positions in Brazil by 2026.

Energy

Use 100% renewable electricity in Brazil by 2025 and globally by 2030;
Improve global energy efficiency by 5% by 2030.

Forests

Restore and protect more than 500,000 hectares of forest beyond the Company’s boundaries by 2030.

Health and safety

Reduce N1+N2 events compared to the previous year-end;
Reach zero fatalities;
Eliminate all risks classified as “very high” for health, safety, the environment and communities;
Reduce the number of exposures to harmful health agents in the workplace by 50% by 2025.

Indigenous Peoples

Support neighboring Indigenous Peoples in developing and implementing their plans and in pursuing the rights set forth in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Self-reliant communities

Help lift 500,000 people out of extreme poverty.

*Under Brazilian law, “decharacterization” means functionally reintegrating a dam and its contents into the environment so that it no longer serves its original purpose of containing tailings.
