A bad cable can cause all of the issues you mentioned, from driver crashes to black screens. If the card is stable under the same conditions you mentioned, by just swapping the cable, then you have your culprit
You can check pin balance with HWInfo64 or GPU Tweak III. It should be enough to point to a bad a cable.
Do you see the image with 1W shown or are you blind? This 1W is powering the WireView itself.
Direct cable to the GPU works. WireView to the GPU doesn't work. Red light on the GPU, which means the GPU cannot detect a cable that can deliver the power (sense pins). Ergo, bad unit or no contact. Capiche?
I had two bad units, one delivered up to 450W and cut the power to the GPU when touched to press its button and the other one dropped pin 6 to almost 0 amps with a slight vibration on the PC itself. Bad units are not unheard of.
