Sound Effect Infinity is one of those rare novels that grabs you from the first page and refuses to let go. David Biddle blends music, mystery, metaphysics, and human connection into a story that feels both wildly imaginative and deeply grounded. The characters are vivid, flawed, and compelling, and the emotional stakes build in a way that kept me fully invested. What really sets this book apart is how seamlessly it weaves big ideas—creativity, consciousness, the power of sound—into a narrative that's genuinely fun to read. Biddle's writing has a rhythm to it, almost musical, and the world he creates feels alive in a way that lingers long after you finish. This is the kind of book you want to talk about with someone the moment you put it down. Thought-provoking, original, and beautifully written. A standout read that deserves every one of its five stars.

This book is a serious mash-up - of genres, of ideas, of characters. Biddle alternates between crisp, noirish dialogue and skillful plotting, and wild flights of speculative fancy and philosophical ruminations. I very much liked how non-stereotypical his protagonists are; there's a lot of very specific detail to keep things grounded. His treatment of the semi-dystopian future is handled with a light, humane touch. All in all, a fun ride with lots of thought-provoking consideration of the role of sound and music in our lives, in and beyond our conscious perceptions.

I couldn't put this down! I was completely swept up into such a unique yet familiar world. Linc (the main character and narrator) has such a strong, funny and charming voice, even if he can be a little rough around the edges sometimes. The intrigue along the way, the little bread crumbs left for the reader were perfectly laid out in a way that felt earned and immensely engaging. With funky premises, I always worry about the author sticking the landing - trust me, this sticks the landing perfectly. Loved it!

From the very first chapter of Sound Effect Infinity you realize you're in for something highly unusual, something that, to borrow Wallace Stevens' dictum about poetry, is going to "resist the intelligence almost successfully." Biddle's ability to make the uncanny seem normal is, well, uncanny. Then, just when you've ready to reach for your tinfoil hat, Chapter 3, appropriately titled "That's All Right," launches into a cogent, exhaustive meditation on musical legends that died too young and the qualities that combined to make Elvis Presley a phenomenon. Whoa! you think, This guy knows what he's talking about. This combination of the bizarre and the brilliant—a "form of cognition connected to improvisation," to borrow Biddle's phrase—is par for the course throughout Sound Effect Infinity. In fact, If I have any bone to pick with Biddle, it's that the title is a bit off-putting, coming down too hard on the esoteric, like those fashion sections of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, so far removed from anything real people look like or would wear that they seem irrelevant. Biddle is nothing if not deeply humane. His compassion for his characters—and by extension for all of us—shines through. Don't let the title deprive you of experiencing this literary tour de force.

Yes to Sound Effect Infinity. Yes! There's so much to love about this book. The true power of music, creativity, unique characters, legends, and thought provoking questions, the list goes on and on. As someone who feels a strong connection to music—often through dance—the book grabbed me not just because of the exciting mystery, but because with each page turn, I felt like I might run into a new, profound question that would shift the way I listen to music and move through life as a creative. Still, my favorite moment in the whole book: paraphrasing… "Well, what did you expect him to say?" IFYKYK. I laugh and ponder this moment on a weekly basis. Sound Effect Infinity is well worth the time for a boatload of reasons. 5 stars. Seriously, check it out!
